Three Shots in One Hole

I recently watched a video of Shane Lowry, The Irish golfer, achieve his second hole in one, in his professional career.

A couple days later, I went to the shooting range and shot my second 3 shots in one tight small hole group in my life. And I was not using a tricked-out target rifle with a super scope. Range was 100 yards off the bench and handheld, no shooting sled.

The first time I was using a made in New Haven in 2000 Winchester model 70 CRF Stainless Featherweight in 6.5 X 55 Swedish Mauser. The scope was a fixed 4x Weaver and the sun was right behind my back. The group was extremely tight with a hint of a cloverleaf. It was so perfect it looked surreal.

I measured it. Was a hint over .30 caliber.

The second one was with a mid 1950’s production standard weight Model 70 Winchester in 270 Winchester. This rifle has the under-lug adjustment screw to adjust for barrel harmonics. The scope again was a fixed 4X Weaver and the sun was at my back. With this group two shots were the same hole and a third one was maybe a 1/16” to the left. Again, the sun was to my back.

Both rifles had clean three-pound old hunting triggers. Not the new boxed triggers which I hate.

Anyway,,,,any stories and details from you guys about similar shooting experiences?

I've shot many one holers.
Of course I only took one shot. 😉

I hang out a fair bit with the short range benchrest crowd.
Believe when I say that I'm nowhere near the middle of that group.
These people spend a LOT of time and money with specialized equipment to shoot small.
Group sizes typically in the .1-.3" range.
I've never heard of a 0.000" group.

Can you shoot a small group with a factory hunting rifle? Yes.
But to consistently do it, the stars pretty much have to align.

Example would be my target below.
Savage Axis action with E.R. Shaw 24" sporter barrel in 250 Savage.
Shooting 75gr Sierra HP Varmint over a lowish charge of Alliant Varmint.
Distance was 200 meters.
Had a great group going for the first 4 rounds. Then the wind caught me out on the 5th round.
Orange dot is 1".

Multiple rounds in the exact same hole sounds like something I would be more likely to use as an explanation for a round(s) that completely missed the paper, lol
