If you live in Idaho and have been around Unit 51 at all, the metropolis of Howe burned to the ground yesterday. Six buildings in all.

Was a big treat in the 50s-early 60s to grab a bag of penny candy in the store while the folks went across the road to Adreasons for a little libation before heading up the road the ranch to visit gram (she didn't allow liquor around).

Here's a link from a local news story.

That's awful, but at least no one was hurt, and according to the news, all the buildings were vacant.

I always liked to stop in the Little Lost Store (when it was actually open) coming and going, but it appears that won't be happening again for a while.

For a second I had the metropolis of Hill City and Howe switched around. Over the years I've passed through there many many times, sad deal. If you read the comments in the linked news article, it's kind of odd how many former owners have commented.

Sorry to hear of their loss. Six buildings pretty much wipes out that small towns community center. Glad to hear that no one was hurt. We will be in their neck of the woods in a couple months. My son has a late season cow elk tag in 51 this December.

Has been gut wrenching for my family as we grew up going to Howe at least a couple of weekends a month to see gram. Was a really neat lady in the bar/cafe way back then by the name of May Peck. She never met a person she didn't like and if she did, she wouldn't say anything. Remember going to the store to pick stuff up for gram and we would just sign the handwritten invoice. Talk about days gone by.

Civilization deal, but ended up being high winds at the time. Other than that would rather not comment due to my own feelings. Just so sad for the folks in that valley that I spent so much time in growing up learning how to jump shoot ducks off the Little Lost River, taking my first deer in Sawmill Canyon, busting sage chickens out in the brush and on and on. You remember the things that were important when you were growing up.
