Trapping Thread 2025/2026

Yeah, what is a fleshing tool?

There was a guy that worked for NAFA, then FHA after nafa went under. He went around to the various state trapping conventions and did fur handling demos. His name was Greg Schroeder.

He would casually knock out a coon/yote/beaver/whichever pelt in a few minutes whilst visiting with the gathered watchers. Just effortless.

And its true, a good knife, and a proper beam makes it as easy as it can be.

Theres a touch, and a feel, and a learning curve sure, but that comes with everything in life.

Unfortunately I haven’t either.
I’ve got a buddy I’ve been giving all of my stuff to since I started. He sells all the hides and gives me a small cut end of the year. I don’t ask for it, but he insists. He used to take them, but not anymore….. they end up in a burn pile or ditch.

Don't ask how I know this, but Australian/New Zealand possum fur is really popular right now in the knitting world. Understand that it is a different species but is there any use for American possum in yarn making?

Always heard they are the best of the best. The cheapskate in me has never been able to get past the price.
I quite like the safeties on them. I always used LDL magnums with good luck. Just recently branched into Bélisle and savageau. Those savs are some big 330’s think they are 11x12

Idk if LDL or Savageau are only Canadian brands, but I’ve literally never heard of them and I thought I knew a fair amount about the brands we get down here. Ya stumped me!

I am gearing up to run a few more traps for a couple weeks. I had three of my 220 trails sets out, I never reset the set that caught the skunk. Checked those three today, and two were tripped. Not sure if deer walked over them or what happened. My confidence went from high to low with this set over the past couple weeks. Now I’m switching up a bit. I’ll try and run footholds in the creek or riverbank for awhile just to get on the board a bit with raccoons.

Seems like the savs are made by Bélisle too. They and LDL are all made in canada
Here’s one of the savs big double framed traps

Well I had to go check those out I had never heard of them either. We are restricted to a 5"x5" trap on land here in Missouri. I wish someone made a quality 155.
I am new to beaver trapping so hopefully not a dumb question but what is the purpose of the extra bar on the trap pictured?

Closes tighter so if you make a bad catch by the tail or something it will
Hold them
