Sorry for the question, i haven't a clue what one would do.
I plan on coming back for an Elk hunt this year, i appreciate after last time on my Elk hunt how difficult it can be.
So say i get very lucky and get my Elk, because the tag fee has dropped for a wolf i might buy one (OTC?) and try my luck.
I get super lucky and knock one over (yes i know more chance winning the lottery) what do i do with the wolf?!
Cheers
Richard

Depends on your house, preference, money for BOTH elk and wolf mounts, and of course your wife. Rug or full body mount seem to be the most popular. You can think about it, but in the long run it's PROBABLY something that you will never have to decide. If you do, it will then depend on the wolf's looks and condition as well as suggestions from any taxidermist you ask. Good luck. Hope you can make it a double tag filled hunt!

Assuming you can't get it out whole...

If it were me-- since I'm not good at caping-- I would carefully skin it out, leaving the head, paws, and tail attached to the hide (just separate them at the joints). Get it cooled and to a taxi as soon as possible. Leave the carcass in the field.

Build a big fire under a full moon, strap it on like a loin cloth and howl at the moon!

I hope you get both, I have seen tons of sign but have yet to see a wolf with a tag in my pocket.

Seriously as much as a full mount is nice I would rug it.

Legally all you have to do is notch your tag, you can leave it lay if you want.

I'm planning on tube skinning and getting the skull cleaned if I ever luck in to one, none of the taxidermy I've seen so far has really tickled my fancy.

Richard, I would suggest that you get a wolf tag ($50) at the beginning of your elk hunt. Most wolves are shot incidentally by elk and deer hunters as they encounter them. Once you get a wolf you won't have to undergo any specific formalities legally. Treat it like you would a great big fox.

Thanks guys, that has answered my question in full.
Looks like i will be buying my tag up front.
Cheers
Richard
