I can find alfalfa cubes and pellets, which is better and why? Going in 8-10 miles and there is some grazing available but not sure how much so will need to supplement. I can also get timothy hay cubes

Just remember if you are feeding pellets its a good idea to soak them in water

Soaking them in water is good or just making sure they have access to a lot of water will work also. If you're camped by a creek or river that will work but yea water is pretty important.

A lot depends on your horse or horses temperament and personality. One is not better than the other - both have their plusses and minuses. Test whatever you are going to use at home for a length of time because you don't want to find out something isn't working 10 miles from trail head.

If your horses are in shape before you head in they'll do a lot better on either supplement than if they are soft. You're biggest concern on this type feed is eating too fast, choking, coughing etc.. Try to give them as much water as they'll take - horses don't want to drink when they are hungry.

I've had to soak some cubes in a water bucket before feeding on some horses because of choking - just test whatever you are going to use at home under similar conditions that you are expecting in the high country.

I've never packed in feed for our boy's. Where we are, I can find an adequate meadow for grazing, and of course we always camp by a creek or at least a Spring. I've had to make a rock dam to pond enough water on occasion for their drinking. I just pack in my portable electric fence, and it works great.
Here in Southern Colorado, we've had so much rain, the grass is pretty lush this year. So no worries and need to pack in feed. That would be a pain in the butt.
