Quail hunting pics from AZ

Well I went to Arizona for a sunny Christmas with the family. I am only good for so much family time and then I go postal. Lickily I got to hang out with a couple guys from this board, Del and Forrest (FEW).

Del took me fishing and although I did not catch any records I had a great time with him and his son. Later in the week I spent a couple of days chasing quail with Forrest. The first day I did not shoot very well, but ended up with 6 birds if I remember correctly. Here are a few of them.

I made a few rookie mistakes along the way. I am used to shooting my auto and forgot to eject the empty from my brothers pump. It figures the next bird to flush was an easy going away shot and I am pulling the trigger on an empty barrel. <IMG SRC="smilies/mad.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0">

Sunday went better and I shot 8. The temps were great and I contemplated throwing on some shorts. Forrest pointed out that it was probably not a good idea. I got the hint immediately. It seems everything out there will poke the hell out a guy.

Here is an example of one of those plants. It is a Chowa (sp?) I believe.

Two days after the hunt I was back in MT and greeted with some shoveling chores. <IMG SRC="smilies/mad.gif" border="0">

BTW, I know I have ugliest yellow house on the face of the earth. <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0"> It came that way and I am too lazy to paint it another color.

great pics Miller. I lived in AZ for 3 years when i was a kid. I chased those little buggers every day with my pellet gun. I didnt know what a season was back then LOL, and my dad paid me 1$ for every one i brought home. That was a great place for a 5th grader to roam!
Those LaCholla (sp) cactus are the worst, they break off and stick to you like crazy because of little barbs on the needles.

Congrats! Those look like fun. I'll have to try to get back down there. I can feel your pain about shoveling snow, as I have close to a foot and a half in my front yard!

I like the house color, easy to find when you stumble home!

How's Axl like the snow? Our big dog loves the stuff. She runs through it then stuffs her face in it eating mouth fulls of the stuff!

Nice looking LITTLE birdies you got yourself there Mr. Miller. As for the house I figure his neighbors want him to keep it that way so they are able to find their way home when the really nasty blizzards are whipping the snow around.

I used to drive a truck (80 Datsun) the same mustard yellow. Talk about losing cool points around campus, I would park in the South 40 so I would'nt be seen.

Once when my kid was really sick, he barfed up some crap that was about that that same color!

Az really has some great quail hunting!! I used to take a wrist rocket with me when I was Mulie hunting and try to pop a couple. Rabbits were so thick it was about a sure thing, after 15-20 shots. Anyways, it was a hellava lot of fun!

I need to go back and get a few more needles in my shins. Some of those things were as bad as 'Bouncing Betty's'!!!

Those lovely stickery things are called Cholla (Choya) is how it is pronounced. They latch on big time. Many people carry pocket combs to pull them out of their dogs or themselves. Works wonders.

If you or anyone form up north want to quail hunt some more let me know.
I found a lot of areas that hold quail while pig hunting 16A and 18B & 42.

What a contrast from sunny Arizona to all that snow. Man, that's lots of snow. You can find that yellow house in it though, nice and bright. Nice quail, are you getting any of them mounted?

I was on my bellie for half a day chasing Speed Goats once and when I was done, I had to pull all sorts of thorns from my Stomach, Chest, Arms and Legs because of the cactus....
That looks like one mugly one to fall into...
My first house was painted that same color in Washington, after I had painted it a nice two tone brown, the neighbors changed theirs from an ugly lime green to that color of yellow...So much for upgrading the neighbor hood...LOL!!!!Thanks for the story and pics again.

After hunting the desert for a while you learn to walk a wide path around the cholla.they have little balls about the size of your thumb with several spines poking every direction that drop off and end up on the toe of your boot, within a step or two it will be embedded in your opposite calf.the pocket comb or multi plier tool work well to get them out.Unfortunately thats where the Quail like to hang out ,in the thickest cholla .As in hospitable as that stuff is a lot of desert critters eat it.
just about every thing in the desert will stick, sting or poison you.
