I’ve posted about bears in CO numerous times.

The draw units aren’t as good as the OTC units, as a NR it’s mathematically impossible for you to draw, for residents it’s worse than sheep.

CO bear more than an species in NA make buzzh’s point for him about folks just buying stuff with no plan.

I can’t think of any rational reason to ever buy a CO bear point full stop.

I’d love to cash in most of the points I have in the next few years and then start over just so I can eventually split them with my son. What other chance might he have for hunting some states with the way the systems and point levels are going?

Becoming a resident of the state he wants to hunt most?

This whole "need" to hunt every state you want is a recent deal. My grandfather never hunted as a NR in any state. My Dad never would have if I hadn't pushed him. Same with my Brother and Nephews.

Maybe people need to focus more on hunting the state they live in, me included, and less time pouting about not getting to hunt six states a year.

No splitting for moose.

I will build points for my kids for other species and am planning to split most of my points with them where I can.

When it comes to the only state I know about, Montana, HuntTalk is not representative of *most* resident hunters. Be it a willingness to pay more for resident licenses, a desire to have more restrictive management in the name of the resource, etc - there's a lot of popular positions on here that are not representative of the whole.

The one you highlight above - the desire to hunt other states with any sort of regularity - is a big one. I would bet the majority of Montana Resident Hunting License holders have never hunted another state as a NR, or if they have it was a once in a lifetime deal. The folks I hunted with growing up and still hunt with never gave a thought to hunting anywhere but their own backyards.

Nice so now you got that 1 Oso tag every couple of years for literally every NR with more than 3 bear points.

it’s a happy thought but reality can still suck. Close 30 years now for me of applying for tags as an Idaho resident with one cow elk tag and one super easy mule deer draw to show for it

Why bighorn sheep? A non resident from any state can hunt bighorns every year till they get one, if they are so inclined.

I don't disagree.

I had an opportunity in Texas that would have made a lot more financial sense, and I could have footed a bill for NR hunting many times over. It was always going to be a western state with hunting opportunity for me, because I wanted to be able to do it whenever I wanted. Helps my wife hated the place too . Fishing, camping, skiing/snowboarding, wildlife, backpacking all of that - more than hunting was all part of our calculus. We want to be outside our whole lives, on space that is available to share. Glad that we chose what we did.

I had recent interest in some NR tags (especially sheep/moose/goat), but the game happens to be about completely played out.

Still going to make it home to Wy and go for an Elk again, just not sure when.
