Montana Governor Bullock just announced today (June 9) some interesting news regarding recreation, public lands and access. Along with the announcement is a notice for a new job called the "Public Access Specialist". Obviously, it would be in our (the hunting community) best interests if that position was filled with a smart and reasonable hunter. See below for a portion of the announcement today. Or check this link. http://http://news.mt.gov/Home/ArtMID/24469/ArticleID/4276/Governor-Bullock-Announces-Public-Lands-Public-Access-Agenda

I will nominate Buzz to move from Wyoming to take the job. Or anybody that Big Fin endorses for that matter.

Governor Bullock announced the following plans to expand and protect public access to public lands in Montana:

1. To create the “Montana Office of Outdoor Recreation,” housed in the Governor’s Office of Economic Development;
2. Create and hire a new position, a “Public Access Specialist” for Montana within the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, whose role will be to troubleshoot specific issues preventing full public access to public lands (as of today the position is currently accepting applications);
3. Ask the legislature to fully fund Habitat Montana, which uses license fees to increase access to public lands but was recently frozen by lawmakers;
4. Call on Montanans to solicit ideas about how to improve access to public lands throughout Montana by utilizing the [email protected] email address; and
5. Recommit his unequivocal stance against transferring or selling of public lands.

All of these policy objectives are laudable and worth pursuing. The public access specialist one in particular could have significant impacts on how Montanans hunt.

I would be interested if:

1. Montana had any game left to hunt.
2. If Montana hunters actually cared about wildlife.
3. If the FWP would break out of 1950 management.
4. If the FWP supported biology and their biologists.

But, I don't see a need for a public access specialist, unless its to provide hiking and birdwatching.
