I've always wanted to load part of an elk in my hunting rig.
Couldn't decide whether to hit the snooze button or get up and try a morning hunt. Guilt got to me and I headed out the door. The wife grumbled get a big one as I left the room. I decided to climb this puker of a ridge that has an opening at the top. It's about straight up but I thought well I'll check it and then head to work later in the morning. As I got to the rock outcropping at the bottom of the opening I didn't see anything. Oh well it was worth a shot I'll just head back down. Upon further thought I was so close to the top that if I just continued up and walked the ridge out I could have my wife pick me up at the bottom. I called her and made the plan. I continued up the ridge weaving from one side to the other. As I got near the top I was on the north side contemplating cutting through the timber on my route back down. Well one more switchback to the opening side and I see the yellow of an elk. I throw the binos up and see horns. At about 90 yards and feeding toward me. He's covered by dead limbs and trees. I noticed that I had spooked two mulies that had a bead on me and were walking toward the bull. Crap please don't spook him. They walk by and I take a deep breath. I knew that I just need to be patient and let the bull feed forward. I had a tiny opening that I had hoped he would feed into. Time took forever and finally he stepped forward. What a thrill. I couldn't tell if he was a 5 or 6 point but I didn't care. I have been bow hunting this area for a few years now and was getting frustrated that I hadn't connected with a bull yet. This area gets tons of traffic and pressure. Even though he isn't the world's largest it was awesome to see the fruits of my labors. Now I need to refuel and call some help to go pack the rest of him out this afternoon.
