A long harsh winter and above average rainfall this spring has put a major dent in Montana’s pheasant populations. MT FWP breaks it down by region. Though as you can see, this young lady in the photo certainly knows where to find them.

Upland bird numbers in general are down across the state but our native sharptails and mountain grouse fared much better. I guess Montana natives truly are a tougher breed.

I was stuck on a plane and didn’t make it out for the pheasant opener but have talked to some of my more fortunate friends; fortunate to just make it afield and fortunate enough to find some of the long tailed birds.

I went out once for about an hour yesterday. My old dog moved 1 hen. There were two guys without a dog hunting in front of us. One guy managed to shoot a rooster but they couldn't find it. I told him to hang tight for a minute and I'll get my old girl in here to get him his bird. Took a few minutes but she did what she does best, finds cripples. The bird was placed in the rightful owners gamebag and we went on with our day of getting the puppy introduced and my old girl a hunt or 2 before she needs to be put down. Since I am practically dogless this fall, I am ok with bird numbers being down overall. Now next year I want a super huge bumper crop of birds.

Not sure why someone would waste good "big game" time chasing those silly things?

Sorry, sometimes I have to be the Devils Advocate;)

I've always wanted Monkeys stocked on the lower winter range county here in the west. Good winter shooting practice.

You clearly haven't seen what damage monkeys can do to winter range.

Oh wait, you're in CO. Nevermind.

Ba dump, dump. I'll be here all week folks..............................Nice one:D

Sometimes when I think about what I have been able to witness in 40 years of central Colorado being pummeled into the ground, it is down right scary. Hell, the last 10 years of it were pretty bad, as bad as it gets. Sometimes a recession is a good thing.
