It's a clear memory - 1996 Oslo, Norway on a long work trip. I was homesick for the most part and reading something I'd brought along about how the elk hunting in Arizona was so great. I started applying a few months later. I've wanted a top tier elk hunt and was willing to wait it out but didn't think it would take 30 years. PERMIT NO. 001 means my name came up before any of the other lucky recipients - even residents of AZ. I've been here a week and will be here another 3 weeks. It opens in one week. My goal is MAXIMUM elk hunting fun. I'm on track.

I can't believe you were thinking about out of state tags 30 years ago. Maybe with reintroduction of wolves in 1995 you had a premonition. Good luck, it sounds like you are going to get your money's worth from the tag regardless of the final outcome.

You might be getting some rain this weekend. Western NM on AZ border is supposed to get rain today. This is much needed in Western NM. Enjoy the hunt.

In the very early 1960s, Idaho offered 10 archery only Mtn goat tags.....I drew permit #001. After successfully hunting and not seeing another goat hunter, I discovered I was the only applicant for those 10 permits. Not coincidently, that was before compound bows (around 1970) allowed anyone to become an "archery" hunter rather quickly.
