OnX Connected Hunting Optics a step too far

If organizations like PETA actually knew what went on in the mountains of Montana during elk archery season, we'd lose archery season... or as some of us call it, "the wounding season."

There are plenty of elk unrecovered during rifle season, but nothing like archery season. And it happens to the most careful and diligent archery hunters, unlike the many slob rifle shooters.

I'll add another unpopular thought - in Montana you should have to choose your weapon. Archery, or rifle. Not both.
Maybe you should go to a state that already has that regulation and leave Montana and archery hunting alone…

Yeah, an aid to recovering a wounded elk so the meat doesn't go to waste is a real freedom infringement.

You mean like no internet?
Yes, for this luddite the fabulous fifties, the sexy sixties, and the sensible seventies are fondly remembered as including much less stress, anxiety, array of pills for exerything, simple record keeping, and a much happier America.
The only modern improvement is HuntTalk, IMO ... and some days that's questionable.

Absolutely, and Brad is another example of someone from out of state coming to Montana and wanting to change it…
So to be a "real" Montanan I should to teach my kids to deface petroglyphs and shoot lead cows? Don't you have a cowboy costume to dry clean? Chest hair to blow dry?

I think Shrap was referring to "choose your weapon".
What happens here all the time is a guy will wound an elk, not recover it, then rifle hunt, killing another elk. The elk loss during archery season is high. No one likes to talk about it, and everyone who archery hunts knows it's true. Not saying there shouldn't be archery elk season, saying that having to choose your weapon would be a good thing for elk and elk hunting overall.

So Brad I was willing to look into your perspective initially and realized that well intentioned you really hadn’t thought it through. Anyone who grew up with a map and compass and managed to pass basic algebra could do the same thing as the high tech rangefinders. Just takes a little longer. Orientation competitions have been going on for a lot longer than we’ve had GPS and range finders. Rational people should be able to have a conversation and recognize that they should consider,at the very least, they are wrong or looking at the wrong end of the horse.
Now I’m not a Montana resident but I have owned 35 Non Resident licenses. I would wager I’ve spent more time hunting Montana than most here and paid for the privilege. Hidden in your post was a concern Montana really needs to take some steps to improve the hunting experience. Most likely guys like me are going to get squeezed out. I would hate to see it get more difficult for me to draw tags but it sure seems to me there is an awful lot of pressure combined with a loss of habitat.
I’ve strayed from where I started. You lost me at dedicated archers and slob riflemen. You don’t support a position you start name calling. Before you insult Montana folks or others, accusing with a broad brush, they teach their kids to deface petroglifs and the like, what are you teaching your kids by resorting to insults?

'Agree to disagree. Your concerns about wounded game are valid, however "choosing your weapon" regulations would not change that. It is a long debated issue, with Montanans resounding widespread and loudly with "NO!!!"

Your point is based soley on personal opinion, unfounded by research data or facts that point to fewer wounded game due to "choose your weapon".
Leave Montana alone with respect to this opinion. Go hunt where you may "choose your weapon" and opine that game is safer there.
