This past Friday was the opener for the ND youth deer season and thanks to a recent action by our legislature 12 and 13 year olds are allowed to take a whitetail doe but only during the 9.5 day youth season.
Given he has football practice every night and a game on Saturday we decided to head out right away after football practice to a rancher friend’s place to see what we could find. As is normal when a person only has a doe tag, we saw almost nothing but bucks and even got to watch two little bucks pushing each other around which was very cool but the horny buggers were not what we were looking for.
But there was one doe that came by...
Have to say I was impressed at how calm he was (although he later said he was nervous as all get out) given he had to wait 5+ minutes for her to offer something more then a texas heart shot. Never did give him a full broadside but quartering away while looking back at us seemed to be enough.
Now it is jerky time.
