Actually what worked for me was I grew up and got bigger than the bullies that beat me up when I was younger. I was 5' 2" tall (as tall as Marland is now

)and about 120 lbs when I left 8th grade and I was 6' and about 200 lbs as a sophomore in High school. I went back to the bullies and looked dwon on them and the roles were reversed. (Learning to fight also helped

)

Bullys are "A" holes and if it takes "A" holes to play sports then maybe sports should be done away with. Frankly I don't see the connection. I recall running into only three or four bullys who played football; one wrestler. None of them were very good at their sport. I would hardly call them varsity material. MarS I learned that the best technique is to get the bully and all the toadies together then go for the biggest one and give it all you got. I got my rear kicked; but, was never bothered by that particular group a second time.

We have an anti-bullying program in our school. Whiskered asked what is considered bullying, the definition used here is verbal, physical or psychological abuse. The kids think it is a joke as does most of the staff. The counselors went to a touchy-feely conference and came back so excited about it. "We will get rid of all bullying if we use this program." The students or staff are supposed to write down anything that appears to be bullying and then then they sit down with bullyer and bullyee and talk it talk it out. But, they have to be written up 3 times before any action is taken. What a load of horese crap. I was bullied in school and I did some bullying in school, you learn where you stand in the pecking order, that is about it. The Columbine High School thing that took place is what got all of liberal american wanting to save everyone. Columbine was awful, but who is to say that is why it happened. Those boys may have done it anyways.

I don't think BULLYING had that much to do with Columbine. I think it was a fantasy born out of video games, unrealistic movies, and the big thing A LACK OF PARENTING. When I was a kid, I played ball, and participated in various school functions. But I had very strict parents. WE (brothers and I) were not allowed to dress as most of the other kids, had to be in at certain times. When I was a junior in high school on school nites I had to be in the house at 8 pm! No if and's or butts, about it. Yep, kids made fun of us, but after the first fight win or LOOSE the snide remarks were kept behind our backs. My father (as most fathers then) saw a need for young men to stand up and defend themselves. There was no shame in loosing. But there was no excuse for not defending yourself.

Whiskers, my boy's school has a "zero tolerance" policy when it comes to fighting. Any student caught fighting will be suspended, period. So, if some kid decks him and knocks him flat on his ass, then proceeds to kick the snot out of him, all he can do is lay there and take it, or he'll get suspended. WHAT KIND OF BULLSH!T IS THAT?!? That particular topic has started more than one argument between The Wife and me, and Boy Number One is only 5 years old.

In his younger years my Uncle Paul was a bit physical! He, Dad, and I were going to the grocery (Bob's Pic Pack) and upon entering the parking lot a fellow (an obvious OU professor) cut Uncle paul off and pulled into the parking space Uncle Paul was lining up for. We parked and started heading for the door to the grocery. The driver of the offending vehicle came within earshot and Uncle Paul said; "Ever do anything like that again and I'll knock your teet out for you!" The professor replied; "Yes and you look exactly like the kind of bullish moron that would do it!" Well, just so as not to dissapoint the professor and to show that he was a man of his word Uncle Paul decked him and left him laying on the pavement. He turned and told him that if he were still there when we returned that he would punch him again. Now who was the bully and why??

Well, Paws, between the two I'd say your uncle was the bully. Taking someone's parking space is rude, but it isn't bullying. I can't really say your uncle was bullying either, though...he was angry and chose to express himself in a violent manner, but that doesn't constitute bullying, either. Assault, maybe, but not bullying.

I was always told to walk away, most of the time ,that only made it worse.If your not part of the gang ,then your an outcast. Your open game for the gang. meet a kid at the door ,beat and bagdger him till the school bell rings till the end of the year. make fun of his cloths and shoes, short hair while the rest has long. One of the worst Ive seen is laughing at a kids weight.My granddaughter is ahd hdd .Ive heard kids call her retard and the dumb stupid kid .At the middle school she goes to. Give me a break , a lot of school shootings could be stopped if the teachers, would watch what is going on. I know ,their job is to teach. But their job is to stop disruptions in the school, too. So these students can concentrate. Instead they turn their backs.Its easier to get rid of the picked on kid. And ,Im sorry, But a lot of the richer parents will encoarege there kids to act better than these less fortunate kids. During little league base ball years ago , I saw this with my own son. He had viral pnuemonia and almost died. He wanted to play baseball. His first practice ,I told the coach he had been ill. Well they had to run around the bases and he laughed and mocked him .And wanted to know what kind of running was that. We were on city property then. But ,I still have not forgottin, my son was a good pitcher and he benched him and wouldnt let him play. My son,quite baseball that year and has never played again.Stop the ridicule and misbehaivor and most would go away.And of coarse rasisiam is a total story in its self.

I had the undesirable opportunity to escort my son back to school after a three day suspension this year for fighting, his first fight ever. We have a zero tolorence policy at his school: those who fight, get suspended, regardless of who started it. It seems my sister-in-laws step son thought he could score some peer points at my sons expense and grabbed some things of my sons lunch tray. He was asked to put it backed. He shouted a few obsenities at my son and it was on. Jeremy takes karate lessons, so a half round kick to the chest and a debilitating wrist lock had that punk squealing like a pig. The lesson I had always taught my son, treat people with utmost respect, but don't be a punching bag, had come full circle. I was kinda proud that day.

Zero tolerance. What the hell is that. Its just another label they stick on to show us what great things our educators are dong. Adults can't even be civil in most cases, and we expect, demand our children be? Its human nature to get mad!

Paws...you know I wouldn't hurt
a flea...even though your Uncle Paul is someone I would have probably gotten along well with. He sounds a lot like my dearly departed dad (the old-school southern cop).

Dad was coming home from work once when I was in grade school. The old car had vapor-locked on him (typical), it was a hot day in the deep south...some rather large guy Dad said he'd never seen before..with his equally unfamiliar wife...were driving down the road. The guy stopped and proceeded to accuse my pop of having a little thing going on with his (the man's) wife. Of course, Dad denied the accusation, but the guy wanted to fight. Dad had done quite a bit of boxing back in his younger days in the military, and had a hot redneck temper. Don't guess he ever ran from a fight in his life. He cold-copped the guy with those big old boney fists of his, left him lying and his wailing wife sitting on the side of the road, and walked the rest of the way home. Mother may have been suspicious after he told us why his knuckles were skinned except for the fact that she was with him at the time the man claimed that Dad was playing footsie with his wife. She knew darned well where he was!

Hmmm! When I posted a pic on Moosie's thread I remembered something from first grade. I remember getting labeled as a bully about the first month of school. They had just introduced wiffle footballs the year I started to school. We were all out playing football, although it really didn't resemble the actual game. One kid grabbed the ball, wouldn't throw it back, and started running with it. I took off after him at a dead run and performed my first (and last) flying tackle. When we hit the ground, I remember the sound that a breaking stick makes...it was Willie's collar bone. Sure, I already felt bad about it, but after the teacher tore all the meat off my butt and labeled me as a bully, I guess I never forgot it. Being I was the youngest of 6 kids, I never realized before that compared to other kids my age, I was a big clumsy ox. Funny how early experiences stay with you...I'm still pretty non-aggressive unless cornered, or unless I think someone else is being picked on.

So where ever you are Willie S. Sorry about first grade...I really didn't mean to hurt you.

No; Rogue, being big and rough doesn't make you a bully. Some of the biggest toughest mothers I ever met are real pu...,err; meek and mild mannered guys!

Well,
I can relate to being on the recieving end of being bullied. In 8th grade I was the shortest guy in the whole school and there was a certain individual and his friend who took it upon themselves to single me out and routienely pick on me. One Day at the end of History class, upon exiting the class room, these two guys started kicking me in the back of the legs. I made it down the hall alittle ways by a set of double doors before I finally lost my cool. I picked up the more agressive offender and threw him through both sets of doors (I never knew I had that much in me!) the other one just stood back and watched. He got up and was coming to me to get the rest of the sh*t kicked out of him when I had two teachers on me and one on him.
We ended up going to the principals office, He got suspended and I was sent home for the rest of the day (not as a punishment, Just as an excused "cooling off" time). I thought that was nice of the principal.
It turns out that another one of my Bullies saw the whole thing and later came up to me and said that he had never seen some one do any thing quite like that before. I was never bothered by bullies again!
My motto is: "They come looking for trouble, they better be prepared to get an ass beatn' from the small guy!"

I gave my girls a checklist to perform when bothered by bulleys. (1) Tell them to leave you alone or you will report them to authority. (2) Tell them you have reported them to authority and the next time you will bust them in the mouth without saying a word. (3) With all the strength you can muster bust them in the mouth without saying a word then go turn yourself in and tell authority why you did it and about the checklist.
