Would any of you gents be willing to share opinions or knowledge about 55a October elk hunting please. I have been up and down 522 From NM to CO many times but never east of the highway around the Costilla area.

You did not expect a straight answer from this group did you ? I did hunt up there about 40 years ago in the snow on the Elliot Barker with a any elk permit, got a young bull, saw a few more ELK. They are there.
