Unit 18 Idaho Elk

Was wondering if there was any archery hunters that are hunting unit 18 in Idaho for elk? We’re heading down for the rifle season next week. We’ve hunted the unit a few times. I was just curious if anyone had any success or if they wanted to share any info! As always it is appreciated. Will be camping around Iron Phone!

I am not sure if it is much help, but I had the rifle tag last year and the archery tag in 2018. In 2018, I was only able to hunt two days, but it was not hard to find elk. Opening morning, I almost ran into one on the road going up to the Heavens Gate Lookout.

The elk numbers seemed to be down quite a bit when I had the rifle tag last year. I hunted 10 days and hiked 50+ miles. I never saw a bull on public land, but I did find cows most days. The elk I found were mostly in heavy timber. There were very few mule deer as well, but quite a few whitetail.

Appreciate the info! We had the rifle tag two years ago and the numbers definitely seemed to be down from the previous years we had the tag. We ended getting a 6 point and two cows two years ago but it was tough. The only bull we found the whole time we were down there.
