My oldest is turning 9 this fall, and I thought it was time. The plan is try to fill a doe tag or two this fall in TX. Next fall we will travel to MT to hunt mule deer with grandpa. Looking forward to getting out with this special guy this year. His first deer rifle is a Weatherby Vanguard Compact in 7mm-08. I had it topped with a Leupold VX-2 3-9x (thanks, Schmalts!) I'm eagerly anticipating a whole new kind of hunting experience with him along.

Got my son the same setup only in 308 win. The first couple of years I loaded light recoil loads with lighter bullets. You will be amazed how quickly the little guy will be needing a longer stock and able to shoot the hotter loads with heavier bullets. Enjoy every minute you can with him in the woods, because it goes quickly. My boy is twenty now and our time hunting is still special, but nothing is like seeing the first few hunts through the eyes of your child.

I love that rifle, and I love that caliber! You better watch out, he will be showing you up when it comes time to put some venison in the pot.

Nice!! My best hunts are with my 13 yo son. He started with a 270 and lite loads, and now shoots regular loads in the field and still shoots the lite ones at the range.
Consider a lead sled or equivalent at the range. It really takes the recoil and may help with developing bad habits ( flinch)

Scott.

Funny you should mention it. I always thought I'd start my boy off with a .243... until I bought my lead sled. You're right. Those things make life at the bench pretty easy.

Awesome choice of rifle/caliber for the young hunter. He will be able to enjoy that rifle for many years to come.

I did start my son off with a .243 which he got at 9yo. He shoots it very well, but he was shooting my .270 with some pretty hot loads (my Savage loves 150g SST at or just shy of 3100fps) the other day off my buddies sled with no problem at all.
