National Guard helicopter lands on private property; elk antlers stolen

Feel free to point out one fact in your post that I replied to. Speculation and conjecture designed to demean and generally cause “hate and discontent” is all I see but you do you.
Do you really believe that government employees who work in wilderness areas don't pick up sheds? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL You probably think that they don't scout too.

Its not against the law for a government employee to pick up sheds in a wilderness area, if only obviously. What law, rule, or regulation is a gov employee breaking by picking up a shed antler at work?

Answer: NONE.

Uh, you lost the plot. Or you never quite found it. Rogerthat, see what I mean. Here you heard it straight from a low level government employee who spends time afield.

You’re two seconds away from being banned.

Quit your crap and keep the thread on track. I tried being nice by telling you to use the PM button. You got your warning.

Test me and you can see what another low level government employee does to your account while I’m on break.

For the snide remarkers, it seems everyone who never flew wishes they had ... so some just gotta badmouth those that did.
Six decades ago, some guys avoided active service by running to Canada, hiding out, or joining the Guard if they could.
That's been over for fifty years! National Guard and other Reserve Component military men and women train and work to same standards as active duty folks ... only have more limited time to do so. Many, many Army National Guard soldiers are recognized at the top of active duty training classes and many also achieve high awards in national military competitions.
As pointed out previously, recent overseas conflicts and national security missions have involved calling up Guard and Reserve units.
So those disparaging National Guard or other military service volunteerism ... and especially those who served previously who are negatively expressing opinions ... you do NOT know of what you speak!

I don't bemoan aviators at all. I don't bemoan the National Guard. I don't even bemoan the folks that did this. It was really, really, really damn dumb though. Not that it makes much difference, but I'd love to hear what they have to say. I hope this doesn't kill their careers, but I suspect it will.

Hank's earned his footnotes and opinions....
Maybe I was reading between the lines too deep, I felt the “losers” comment was in regards to an alleged comment our Commander In Chief never made. If that is what he meant then I stand by my comment. It’s been debunked.

Conscription is evil, I have no issue with voluntary military service. I believe voluntary military service should be required for full voting citizenship.

As far as these allegations go, if it can be proven that they landed on private land, that is obviously trespassing and they should be given an appropriate punishment. Having looked at a map of where this happened, I suspect that they landed on public land.

Maybe the sale of antlers should be outlawed. The sale of wild game is already illegal, and for similar reasons shed antlers should be too. If not, and these elk antlers are so valuable a commodity for these landowners, then why should we have elk mitigation programs for them to benefit from when they see the elk as an asset?

I know I took home well over a hundred sheds and many pounds of mushrooms from work. Pretty much every new job was another chance to scout an area for hunting, mushrooming, shed hunting, foraging, camping or taking the family on a picnic. Most of my favorite places were found because of my job.

It never accrued to me that anyone would care one way or another, and I guess I wouldn't have given a rusty rats ass if I knew they did.

What was your job?

Just thought I'd add one more helicopter pilot story.

We used to have this guy loved to chase animals. Bear, moose, deer, whatever. I used to have a picture of a moose's ear about eighteen inches away from the pilot's right foot pedal. Doors off.

One day down in Utah, I forget where, someone got his numbers off the side when he was chasing deer. I'm not sure what came of it but our manager and the pilot had to sit down and have a very serious discussion with a fish and game officer. It helped that he was an ex cobra pilot and state trooper from Idaho, maybe. He didn't get busted.

That guy just retired from United. Ended up flying big Boeing's across the Pacific.

Then there was the experienced mountain pilot and bow hunter Montana Army Guard warrant officer who flew his elk camp into the backcountry near Lincoln using an Army Guard huey.
Unfortunate for him, there was an active duty Army colonel riding in with an outfitter on horseback, with a sore butt and a pencil to write down the tail number of that low flying Huey.
The warrant officer was held responsible and paid a price for his elk camp airlift. Horses later extracted his camp from the backcountry.

That’s why you do it with NVGs…..
