National Guard helicopter lands on private property; elk antlers stolen

I recently had the privilege of working with a former F18/35 pilot. He is one of the most humble and hard working people I’ve been around.

My uncle flew in Viet Nam and then was an Alaska bush pilot for many years. I’d say the same about him.

My Uncle Bill flew hueys, and my Uncle Murphy flew Jolly Green Giants in Vietnam. I never heard about it… kind of wish I did.

Then there was the experienced mountain pilot and bow hunter Montana Army Guard warrant officer who flew his elk camp into the backcountry near Lincoln using an Army Guard huey.
Unfortunate for him, there was an active duty Army colonel riding in with an outfitter on horseback, with a sore butt and a pencil to write down the tail number of that low flying Huey.
The warrant officer was held responsible and paid a price for his elk camp airlift. Horses later extracted his camp from the backcountry.
Have you ever noticed that some of the most silly situations always end up by happenstance with a high ranking official?
Our last one was our base sent members to do a ceremony at a major league sporting event.
While riding up in an elevator, in uniform, some of the members were asked why they hadn't shaved and had a beard.
"We are SOF, don't need shaving waivers, and don't have to shave like everyone else." is not what you tell the 3-star who Commands AFSOC.

Before I started flight school there was a year backlog of students back in 2000. The Training Command said find a place to go (any military installation) or we will find something for you to do. I called the ND Air Guard and asked if they wanted a Marine 2ndLt to hang with them for a year. They said hell ya, so I drove up there in my ‘68 Plymouth Sport Fury, CHUMed charts and lifted weights 5 days a week until a new LtCol found out where some guys were and I had to go back to PCola. Good deals never last. But while I was there one of the old timers told me a story of about a buddy of his who took a 2 seater F4 Phantom and landed it on a highway in ND, picked up a buddy and took him for a ride.
Things were a lot different back before everyone had a video camera/phone/camera/mini computer in their pocket. I think all the fun ended in about 2012.
Much simpler times.
