Good deal. Kudos to you, I don't think I could have let the suriving deer suffer a slow death attatched to the other buck unable to run away from whatever predators there are there or slowly die of dehydration.

Agree'd, absolutely the right thing to do. I wouldn't fault anyone for using a tag on an animal in that situation.

Definitely the correct choice. I would've done the same thing. Plus you get twice the meat out of the deal.

I had a brother-inlaw in Michigan come into a similar situation. Bow hunter and finished the live deer. Did not have sense to ask for both heads. Very unique. He was only thinking of the live deer. Respect,

Thanks for the comments. I salvaged 28 pounds of steaks and 50 pounds of ground from the bucks. The dead buck had lots of deep bruising all over, that had to be cut away. He had bruises all the way up on his back strap. He took a beating, for sure!
