As far as the crate traininng goes, I spent her first night with us on the kitchen floor next to her :/ Moved the crate into the bedroom the next night and it seems as long as she could tell we were near for the first few weeks she was good. After that all we had to do was mention "bed" and she would take off on a trot for her crate. When I deployed last the wife decided she felt better with Daisy having run of the house at night so now she has a bed next to the fireplace. She usually ends up sleeping in the hallway between all of our bedrooms. She couldn't be more of a sweetheart or a good girl. She potty trained quickly and never chewed up anything but her toys (I can't tell you how many "indestructable" toys she has shredded). She is definitely daddy's girl

Thank you. We went 6 years without a dog while in Europe and that was not fun. Won't do that again. For my money sporting dogs, especially retrievers, can't be beat. At 3.5 years she has finally slowed down on destroying toys!!!

Puppies are a blast...I must admit to a story that I had not wanted to tell the HuntTalk crew...after welcoming my new buddy home I found out a week later that my superiors had decided that I get to spend a substantial portion of the next 6 months on the road to catch train new employees on rangeland inventory, plant id, & ranch planning. As a single person with a job where pets are not allowed, this would mean that he would have had to be at a friend's house or a kennel for a week(s) at a time during his formative days. It was also evident that the neighbor dogs were hellbent on getting through my fence to fight the little guy. Because of the time that I will be away from home on detail, I decided it was best that my little monster needed a home that he wouldn't have to be subjected to weeklong stays at a kennel or friend's house. So with a heavy heart, I returned my Briar back to the breeder for placement in a hunting home that had children. That moment stung pretty bad but I'm glad he is in a happy home.
Wow Mthuntr, that is a hard call to make, but I think you made the right choice by Briar. Pack animals like dogs need/crave a "pack" to belong to and be a part of the community that is the pack. Hope your life circumstances once again allow you to have a happy dog in your life.

I know that it had to hurt and still does. Being a grownup and doing the right thing is often that way. You had to do the best thing for that pup. Sorry for your loss but that pup will bring joy to others. You were brave.
