Just got back from a 4 1/2 day muley hunt in region 7 of Montana.I'll give you a run down of my trip/hunt.Had a great time again in Montana and the people there were great.I have a picture of my deer but am too computer dumb to be able to put it up
Day 1-check in a hotel in Broadus, change and head out to dtrech the legs and hunt. Its a 24 hr drive from Pa.Sign in at a block management area and walk in a couple miles.Immediately spot a doe feeding and being the rut decide I should move closer and look around. As I close in, I spot a buck bedded in a creek drainage. He's a nice sized 2x3 but I came for something a little better and pass an easy 115 yard shot.Only been hunting about an hr at this point.Keep going and only find one more doe before dark
Day2-Head to another BM area I reserved ahead of the trip, and check in.Put about 6 miles on the feet here and can't find anything.Move to another sign in BM area and locate a nice herd of antelope.Further in I glass up 8 deer put they appear to be on private so I back out.Decide this isn't a great deer area from all the miles put in with few sightings and decide to go back to day 1 BM.Drive back there and decide to hunt the other end of it and see whats around.Walk in about 2 miles and get high and glass till dark;no sightings except for praire dogs and a badger
Day 3- I meet up with some locals that I met while hunting elk this Sept.We all head to another BM area and start hunting.Put more miles on the feet and only come up with some antelope spotted. They decide the areas not great this year and change plans to hunt along the river and do some drives for the afternoon. We push out a few deer but nothing worth shooting
Day 4- they talked with some ranchers overnight and got us some permission on a couple of ranches to hunt for the day.Start off with finding 2 does and a small buck at 1st light.I pass on this one too hoping for a little better.Find some more does and another small buck the remainer of the morning.Along with 2 very nice bull elk I wish I had a tag for. They decide to hunt another ranch for the evening to try and find some nice bucks.we get to the new ranch a few hrs before dark and see 4 does out feeding right away.We start wlking a ridge line and glassing into the draws as we go.We gass up 5 more does and continue on.Finally, with light fading, here comes 3 5x5 bucks up out of a draw. The rear one is the biggest so I get set and take the 350 yard shot;clean miss.Restalk up on them but this time to within 150 yards.I have the biggest broadside so I get on the sticks and shoot;another clean miss.I am in shock as I had the gun dead on at 200 yards before leaving for Montana. The bucks split up and 2 head towards the truck where the father is working his way back to.We hear some shots and one is down.To me it was a decent buck but he was a little upset at the size/ground shrnkage
I still can't believe my misses and remember the day before I took a hard fall on my gun while putting on drives. They think I just choked so I let it go but its really on my mind if my scope was knocked out
Day 5- Me and the son head to another sign in area for the morning which is suppose to be very good.we sign in and get our map for our designated hunt area.Driving to the parking area we spot a monster buck.We pull out the map and decide he's on the wrong side of the road from our hunt area;heartbreaker. This was the biggest buck of the trip and has great points/mass with some stickers off the main frame, but we have to pass him up.We see a couple more small bucks out and about on our drive to the park area. Then I spot some does and decide to get a closer look.I then find a decent buck chasing one of the does.Last day so he's mine.I get ready to shoot when a bigger buck comes out to fight with him.Immediately I get on the bigger deer, and the 2 start to fight. This is a real battle and they are going at it hard.I shoot 3 times and miss each at a mere 70 yards. All the while they just keep fighting and pushing each other, switching positions making it tough to keep track of the bigger deer.I have 1 last shot in the gun so I decide to aim under the buck, squeeze off a round and this time he's hit.He makes it about 50 yards before falling over stone dead.I'm about as happy as can be and the whole thing would have made a great video. We go over to the buck and all the while the other one is just standing there eyeing us up
He turns out to be an average 4x4,but it was a hard earned trophy to me.All in all, we probably put close to 30 miles on our feet in 5 days of hunting.the VX-3 and Federal premiums did their job perfect. My fault for not checking my scope after the fall I took or I would have taken a much bigger deer.I'm still very happy with what I brought home.May not be much to you guys that live there, but I had very limited time for this trip, and low deer numbers to contend with
I had a great time on both my trips to Montana this year and met some of the nicest people ever in your state. If I can figure out a way to become a resident there, I will be moving soon. Its tough to walk away from a pretty successful business here to start over though. You guys have some of the best hunting I've experienced in the west.I wish now I would have tried to draw a antelope tag too. Thanks to members of this site for giving me some ideas and suggestions on areas for my hunt.It helped to narrow my search area considerably. And, thanks to Trey and Stacy, the father and son team I met who took time out of their weekend to get me a deer.I foresee some nice gifts coming your way at Christmas time
hope you liked my hunt story. Its a memory I'll have forever now.Great people, great time, great place!!!!
If someone wants to help,I'll post a pic. of my buck

I can feel for you on that drive out.Glad you had a succesful hunt and next time hope you have a tag
for that bull elk.Not many of them back here.
