My Lucky Year!

IMG_8075.jpegIMG_8100.jpegIMG_8102.jpeg
A little update. Been getting in some range time. I am a bow hunter at heart and am lucky to be able to practice to 120 yds on my property with a big old wood shop as a back stop lol. I am planning to do my best at getting the moose with my bow but am certainly not above using the rifle if it comes down to it!
The sheep I am planning to use the trusty .270… My dad has a shooting range on his property and he reloads for me which is a blessing! I’m feeling pretty confident to 600 yds.
For those who are wondering-
The bow: Hoyt Rx1 Turbo
Rifle: Tikka .270 Win. Leopold scope

I got great news from the sheep biologist this morning! She flew the unit last week to do a goat/ sheep count. And said she saw more rams than she has in 8 years! Sent me some locations to check out and a few pics. Exciting stuff! Finally think it’s going to work out to do another scouting trip this weekend. 🤞🤞

I’m glad I found this thread! Awesome pics and story so far and I can’t wait to see how your hunts play out! Enjoy your fall!!

Got out for another scouting trip last weekend. Jeff and I decided to split up to cover more ground. We went in different trailheads and were @ 5-6 miles apart as the crow flies.. The youngest brother (Austin) went with me. He’s a pretty good hiking and glassing partner. And a ramon noodle monster!.. I didn’t find a single sheep but we saw a couple muley bucks and a mtn goat. As well as more incredible scenery. Had fun, worked hard gaining just under 6,000 feet of elevation in 2 days but no sheep. Oh well, Jeff found em!

Truck bed is full of fat backpacks and we are on the road to go sheep hunting! 3 of my bros are with me and Dad plans to come in tomorrow. Season opens on Monday (15th) and we are hoping to glass up some rams before then.
Got about 7 miles of backpacking ahead of us.
I was inspired by @npaden and @Carl 9.3x62’s recent sheep hunting escapades and shot my rifle one last time yesterday to make sure I’m
dialed!😜
Goal is to enjoy time in God’s creation with my Dad and brothers. Fishing, hiking, relaxing, camping, glassing for sheep, and looking at endless awesome scenery- what more could a person want?- Maybe a sheep!
I would love to get one in the high country, but if it doesn’t look and feel like the right ram this trip that’s ok. I have nearly 2 1/2 months of season..
Not sure how much I will update this thread - depends on whether or not I have service as well as battery life on my phone, but I will try to when I can.

Good luck to everyone else out there! Be safe and remember that time is precious. Use it wisely!

Man I somehow missed this thread. Stoked for you! Looks like you’ve had a helluva summer and now going to have an incredible fall.

You and your family will remember this forever. Pretty cool how much everyone is involved.

Following along. Thanks for sharing your journey. Shoot straight!

Made it to camp in good time to glass last night. Found these 3 rams a little over a half mile away at last light but couldn’t quite tell what they were.
Found em again this morning and determined that they need another year or 2. The dark one is decent and is broomed off on the right side but still think we can do better!
They ended up moving down and straight across from camp to 460 yds.
We are camped on a little cliff above a lake where we can see pretty good!

You’re right, there SHOULD be!
I am lying in my tent now waiting on weather to lift so we can go glass again but will start updating this as best I can.. We actually have great reception in the new camp spot. There is a lot of typing to do!
Good luck! Don't pull a Carl! 😆

I'm expecting updates from both of you guys! Some great sheep that you guys have been looking at, time to quit looking and get one on the ground!

On Sunday, day before opener we moved camp about 3 miles, close to where Jeff had seen the 10 rams several weeks ago. As we popped over the last bench where there’s a couple small lakes and we planned to camp, we see 12 rams going over the ridge! They were up and over before we could get a great look. We set up camp and then Eric and I hiked up top to where we could see them again. They were right where they had been when Jeff saw them.IMG_8492.jpeg

I have lots more pics and video of the rams but the 2 in the one pic were the ones we decided were the most mature. I knew I would be happy with either one but decided I would take the one on the left if given the opportunity! Feel free to say this was a dumb choice.. I think the other one has a bigger curl/ longer horns, but I really liked the mass of the left one and he seemed to be the older/ boss type ram! I’m no expert on judging sheep though.. They were below us at 250 yds then fed out to about 600 where we left them for the night.
We watched them for several hrs before we went back to camp.IMG_2395.jpeg
