I’d been putting in a solid effort this year to get my first bear, and had high hopes after finding some gated forest service roads in the northwest part of the state that were loaded with fresh scat. My hopes grew even more after seeing good bear activity on the trailcam.

My plan today was to get in the the trail cam area early around 430 and just wait a few hours since most of the pics were between 7 and 8 pm. I hadn’t walked more than 300 yards past the forest service gate when I saw this bear grazing in a small clearing not 50 yards away. After making sure of no cubs, I dropped her with one shot from my 7mm08.

After taking her to the taxidermist tonight, he figured she was a dry sow about 9-10 years old and commented how good the fur was so I’ll likely rug her. Tomorrow I’ll check her in at Fwp and maybe get more definitive measurements. Either way, it’s very satisfying after all the hiking and then to target and pursue this bear after the seeing the scat, and then the pics. Looking forward to some bear sausage too!

How do you prepare the steaks? Braising?
get up to suggested internal temp of 160 (to kill possible trichinosis) slowly. For bear I cook most often in a skillet with a little olive oil, and just salt and pepper steak. go slow onthe heat and flip often so does not get tough.

I also grill some, low temp so does not excessively scorch amd make tough.

yesterday I rendered the fat off my spring bear, made some great lard that taste mild and a little sweet. It was EASY.
