Most memorable moments hunting 2022!

Whats everyones most memorable moment from 2022?

I had a shoulder surgery last fall and was able to spend a couple weeks at a trail head and hunt a few weeks. I was able to meet a bunch of different people from all over the US. Watched a buddy of mine kill his first elk! Last fall was not what I wanted, but was probably what I needed.

Lets hear some stories.

With what I had going on last year I was just happy to be able to get out for a few hours in the morning to hunt deer. Getting 2 of them was fantastic! It proved to us that it was possible.

Helping a landowner friend with some whitetails near his feedlot and scoring a double on a whitetail doe and fawn. Two shots, two short tracking jobs, one surprised farmer. Not saying it was a difficult hunt, but had a blast hunting close to home towards the end of the season.

My last year's most memorable moment is easy to recall. It was the moment I pulled the trigger on my first antelope and watched it drop right there.
I had been invited to join my best friend, his father and friend. That moment with my friend watching through his scope beside me was the culmination of 5 years of buying points, planning, buying gear and daydreaming.

Opening sunday Montana rifle deer and elk. Daughter #2 (20) and her boyfriend came out with me. I pulled her pack and rifle out of my truck and handed it to her, she handed them to him and said my bitch will carry that chit!.

Mid season Packing a cow out with my 13 y/o daughter (#4) , blizzard and 30 mph winds, whiteout in the dark. 3.5 miles, I was gonna take the two hind quarters and give her one front quarter and the neck meat, and come back for the rest in a second trip. she said gimme both fronts, I added the back straps to my pack and we took off to do it in one trip. Half way back she started crying, I told her to drop the pack and I would come back for it, she wouldn’t and never gave up. Fence at 800 yards from the truck, we had to pull the packs off to cross the fence, I told her again to leave it, she said no help me get it back on, packed it the last 800 yards. 110 lb daughter packed out the front half of an elk by herself. Im not known for being the emotional type (might have been a tear of my own at that moment) but I gave her a hug as we walked down the driveway and told her how proud I was. My ankles still haven’t recovered from that day.

Two very memorable moments this year.

Almost got struck by lightning and by some miracle got it on video. (Lighting was 5-10 miles off when I started the video)

Second was the first hunt my six year old daughter came on. Late January private property doe hunt below zero. She was a trooper and a half!

I always make fun of my wife for carrying a plastic poncho. This year we got caught in a rain/hale/lightning storm in the highcountry. She turned around just in time to see me pull my very own "secret poncho" out of my pack and throw mine on and then dive under an uprooted tree to avoid getting soaked.

"The secret Poncho" was brought up several times over the course of the trip. lol

Of course, when I turned around, she was taking my picture....lol

January 2022, 9 weeks post treestand accident. Grateful I survived and walking, (barely but i could do it) luckily i had a blind setup prior and could drive right to it.

Opening day hunt with son and grandson, helping pack out grandson's gnarly antlered bull elk down the mountain in rain, sleet, and wet snow. What a day for family hunting!

Lots of memorable moments for 2022
First Antelope for me and my BIL




BIL got his first elk with archery equipment.

After 3 years of strictly bowhunting turkeys, I finally got my first bird.


After 2 seasons hunting together, we were able to get my buddy Kory on his very first deer, and it was a dandy! I hope 2023 is even half as memorable. Good luck to everyone this season! This is a great thread full of positivity, pride, and gratitude!

A few from Idaho are indelible.

Maiden voyage in packrafts with @abqbw . We were complete neophytes with boating and certainly packraft hunting. Ended up with over 20 days on the water looking for moose with some downright scary and also fun experiences as we rode the learning curve.





First sighting of this bull that I would catch up to a month later was memorable.

Taking this cow a couple hundred yards from my front door after barely being able to walk into the radiology lab 2 months earlier. The icing was it was in the freezer by noon the next day and Rio & I enjoyed tenderloins for dinner.
