This is a great group of men, women, and kids all fighting to keep our outdoor heritage alive involving hunting, fishing, and trapping. The banquets are a lot of fun and they have some fantastic raffles, live auctions, games, 3 rifle raffle drawing, and other activities. The food is fantastic too! More than 30 firearms are up for grabs, and there will be many other prizes besides these also. Montana SFW is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) based in Missoula Montana but there is a new chapter starting up in Dillon Montana, and a couple other towns in Montana might be gearing up to join with us in the near future.

Thought I would add this is that MT SFW is very active and involved in the legislature and the group has testified on many different issues over the years. MT SFW is very active in trying to make a difference. Jeff Darrah is the executive director and is a retired Montana Fish & Game Warden. His experience and knowledge is so beneficial to this group.

Montana SFW also supports our youth and as an example of that $5,000.00 was donated by SFW to the new indoor youth shooting facility called the Liberty Center Indoor Range. It was built to be used for Air Rifle, Air Pistol, and Archery. I understand that this is the largest indoor range west of the Mississippi. In the basement of this facility will be an indoor rimfire and pistol range. The youth have first use of these facilities, but it is also open to club members if it is not scheduled to be used by the kids. They have first rights of use.

SFW seems less like a conservation group and more like a “protect MT’s hunting heritage” group. That’s just the impression I get based on what I’ve seen them get engaged with at the legislature. They recently celebrated the BLM’s decision to revoke AP’s bison grazing rights which had me a bit puzzled. I wasn’t sure how that was relevant to their mission. They are definitely active at the legislature and commission meetings.

Read about the group on their website and I think it will help answer questions you might have. I am a life member of the group. If you have more questions and concerns you can contact the folks in charge easily enough and I'm sure they would have a conversation with you on your concerns. The folks in charge have their contact information on the site and I think it would be worth your time.

Is this group associated with UTAH SFW?
Absolutely NOT! I too have heard bad things about that group and some of the things they have done. Montana SFW is not affiliated in any form. I know there have been folks who would not join Montana SFW because they thought they were aligned with the Utah group. It's unfortunate that the names might lead a person to possibly think that and I know some folks who have not joined with us thinking that might be the case, but I assure you it is not. Go to the website of Montana SFW and see how they formed and when they formed.

They have some pretty quality firearms for the raffles and such too. Check these three out on the 3 gun raffle tickets.

1. Christianson Arms Ridgeline 300 Winchester magnum.
2. Henry Golden Boy 17 HMR with engraving in the stock.
3. Springfield Armory XDM Elite Pistol in 10mm.

Read the Tracks & Trails on-ine and you can see more of what SFW is all about.
