Hello, I am new to the forum and have a few questions hopfully someone can help me with. I will be heading to unit 401 (region 4)next weekend to do some mule deer hunting. Curious how the deer population is in the area? The gentlemen i will be going with is from the area but has lived here in Texas the past 10 years so hasnt hunted the area for some time now.
What type of bucks should i expect to see if any? what would be considered a trophy? I have never hunted mule-deer, primarily whitetails.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Jeremy

401 was one of the districts where antlerless deer hunting has been eliminated due to EHD in the Whitetail herd. The concern was that folks will switch to shooting mule does instead of whitetail and that the population couldn't handle it. Not a bad call on FWP's part at all.

Not sure what the overall population is, but it's a fun unit to hunt. There are some good muleys around, but you have to put in the time & boot leather to get 'em. Check out map.mtbullypulpit.org for a free hunt planner that includes public land & Block Managemnet Areas.

Have fun and hunt well!

"Shouldn't have told the Montanans that you were from Texas."

What's with the attitude about Texans? We get quite a few out of State hunter's here and they're always treated warmly and with respect. Whenever myself and my Texas buddies go out West to hunt we are always respectful of the locals and always leave our campsite in better condition than we found it. We also go out of our way to be friendly to nearby camps and share intel on where animals are located and invite them over for a drink by our fire. The local Colorado residents in Lake City Colorado were borderline rude.

We shared coffee with folks from Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin and they were all friendly. I guess they (locals) don't like their stretch of mountains over run with out of Staters which I can understand but it is a National Forest and open to us all. There is no reason to be rude to people who are respectful of the land and to the locals.

Making fun of Texans is a national pasttime.

HD 401 can turn out some pretty good bucks, although the areas that are accessible to the public can get hunted pretty hard. One of the biggest deer I've ever seen on the hoof was in 401, a buck that would probably go in the mid 190's.

Thanks for the input guys. Finishing my last day of work here in TEXAS then will be headed north on Thursday in hope to get a little scouting and possibly fishing in. I will post photos of trip when I return home.

The folks in SW Colorado couldn''t have been more cordial during our first season hunt. We had to visit the DOW office to replace a lost license early Thursday (10th) before the Sat opener and the staff accommodated quickly and politely sharply at 8 am.

Simple minds need simple calisthenics.:D ;)

The only thing better is making fun of people from Arkansas:hump:

Well I guess everybody makes fun of someone and we usually make fun of Oakies. They are envious of our prosperous State and OU Sucks.

About SW Colorado-We hunted unit 71 back in 2009 and I found the people easy to get along with. The residents in Lake City Colorado had dreadlocks and beads and didn't seem to be too tolerant of folks wearing cowboy hats. To each his own.
