I think the data would be shocking in Colorado. I usually have a minimum of two Co tags a year and I think I get the harvest survey on 25 percent of my tags at most.

The results are interesting...the presentation below is from last year...but around 11 min mark you can see the info e reporting provides DNR. '23 was 1st year of e reporting for turkeys in SC.

I'd rather stick to the traditional waterproof tag. If they want mandatory harvest reports, they could make it to where you can't put in for next year's draw or buy a tag until you fill out the report. I had it in Nebraska this year, and they could use a few changes. I wasn't allowed to quarter or break the animal down until I called in into game and fish. What if I had been 3 miles back without reception? I don't like that aspect of it.

Not sure I'm a fan of "mobile tagging" and removing the requirement for a physical tag. Saskatchewan uses a "blank seal" system, where you order blank seals (tags) throughout the year and fill them out as you go. I can buy a tag, fill it out by pen and go hunting immediately after, no need to go in store or wait for the tag in the mail (which you can still opt to do).

We also have mandatory online reporting, usually asks you if you hunted, which zones, which weapon type, how many days, if you've harvested and when/with what, and your observation on herd numbers based on last year's if you hunted then. It takes me about 5 minutes to fill out ALL my surveys (5+ tags) once the season is over. Usually, you have until end-January to fill them out. The first year they sent you a warning if you didn't fill them out, and I believe you can't apply for draws or buy tags until you've filled them out, but I could be wrong. Mandatory reporting is pretty f'n basic and should be mandatory everywhere for big game.

Oregon only asks if you hunted, did you harvest,what unit, days hunted,antlerless or antlered and weapon used. For seasons ending in that year you have until 1/31 to submit the info. If you don't you're charged $25 on your next years application.

I don't use Oregon's mobile tag option because I'm old and crotchety and don't like newfangled stuff. I do however, like being able to buy my tags online and print them out on my home printer. Because then, I can scan the tag back into my computer so that after I kill and tag something, and as long as I don't get checked in the field, I can just print out another tag and go hunting again. I can kill all the forkies I want and still hold out for Big Hank.

With 58 years of hunting, I have never had a tag checked in the field.

No, I wouldn't really do that, but I can't believe that I am the only one who has figure that out that little flaw in the system.

We can etag salmon and steelhead currently in Idaho; I’d guess more will come in the future. I plan to do the salmon and steelhead etag in the future if for no other reason than not having to carry around the big piece of paper that salmon and steelhead permits are

If you were a bit younger and less crotchety, you would just print to a pdf from the get-go and throw the scanner in the trash.

Big fan of mandatory reporting and disqualifying for future licenses if you don't participate, like in New Mexico. Biologists need as much data as they can in order to make the most educated policy choices.

You'd have thought Sherman was marching through when Alabama instituted mandatory deer and turkey check a couple of years ago.

Mobile tagging is about the dumbest thing I've seen yet.

Fill in info in the app, fill in info on a separate piece of paper, and tag the animal
or
sign your name on the tag and tag the animal

I ALWAYS forget a dang pen, last thing I’m thinking about. I’ve signed in blood, lead bullet tips when forgotten.

We have to check in or report every animal here within 24 hours. What county, what weapon, length between eye and nostril, circumference of antler base, amount of points, also how many other species we've encountered. It was pretty crazy the first time I traveled west to hunt and you wrap your tag on it and that's pretty much it unless someone calls. Felt like I was breaking the law unintentionally.

Keep a Sharpie in your first aid kit. Can be useful in a lot of situations and the little minis take up almost no room at all.

I do the same with a ziplock baggie. Felt tip marker, tags, zip ties.

Not in my state it isn’t.

I was suprised when they didn’t ask for my confirmation number this year when we dropped my buck off to turn it into summer sausage.

There was a line of trucks 10 deep and they didn’t ask any of us for our number. When I asked if they needed it they said no.
