Anytime Mike Lee and public lands are uttered in the same breath - it hasn't been good. I'm sure the bill will change over time. Just flagging this so people can read it and be aware.

"It proposes to amend the Wilderness Act to allow DHS access to conduct operations within wilderness areas. DOI and the Department of Agriculture will not be allowed to impede or prohibit DHS search-and-rescue operations that take place within 100 miles of the southern or northern borders."

I didn’t read the bill so there maybe some detail that points to other intent but I would guess Mike Lee is just “flooding the zone”. DHS could operate in wilderness with SxS tomorrow and who is going to file a lawsuit? This is the problem. The same branch of government breaking the law as would enforce the law.

I found his titling of it as a “conservation act” as a way to show a less knowledgable voting base that he is “working hard for conservation.”
If it passed with that title he could point to it when he tries the next public land selloff - “hey, i passed the boarder lands conservation act! Im all about protecting public lands - now lets sell these lands…for conservation.”

Conspiracy theorists have been talking about the 100 mile zone for decades. Now Darth Lee wants to codify it.
Then there is section 8 of the bill. This requires the applicable secretaries to "remove fuel" which may contribute to wildfire. THat would be logging of forests with 100 miles of the border, including Big W wilderness.

1. Nothing in this Act authorizes the prohibition of legal uses on covered Federal Lands. Then lists grazing, O&G exploration and extraction, etc.
