New fire that will likely affect some hunting Wyoming.

UPDATE: 'Mullen Fire' at Almost 4K Acres - More Growth Expected

It is named the Mullen Fire and it is now burning in Medicine Bow National Forest in the Savage Run Wilderness area about 50 miles west of Laramie, Wyoming.

yup you can follow it on inciweb...I will be in the Northpark area of CO for 1st rifle. The Middle Fork and Cameron Peak fires are already impacting things...now this one to the north...that whole area needs precip bad.

The smoke as much as the flames themselves. We were getting a steady flow of smoke into Cheyenne from the Cameron Peak Fire but now that is all going east I understand. Smoke alone will not move animals but dense smoke will. I also have SpO2 issues so it definitely affects me.

I'll be up there for first rifle as well. I picked up a wall tent this summer and was planning on getting a wood stove but as dry as it is, I'm wondering if a propane heater would be safer.

Yea we have a wood stove and a nuway propane tent stove. It works well but chews through the propane. Might be a few runs into Walden for a tank exchange or two.

Wonder how unit 11 will fare? I finally drew a type 1 elk tag and am worried I may have waited 11 years for nothing. Obviously I hope the people that live and work there are safe and that is the most important thing right now but it appears to be dangerously close to that unit.

As of now the closure ends at highway 130, 11 is north of there. Been in 11 since Sept 1. slow for elk but picking up some. By Oct. and into Nov. the fire should get some snow and slow or be out.
Just keep tabs on it for now. WG&F will take care of your tag if they close the area before the season opens.
I would hunt it later in Oct for bigger bulls but snow could limit access.
Evacuations ordered for Keystone and pre evacs for Centennial.

You still have to play the wind because they detect you as a greater threat than the fire itself, but according to articles I have read if smoke is dense enough, it has a tendency to dull the smell senses in wild animals. I am not sure if that is true or not and do not right offhand vouch for it as true but it is something to research deeper and maybe think about and try during the hunt.

(LARAMIE, Wyo.) September 20, 2020 – The Mullen Fire began on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2020 in Savage Run Wilderness, Medicine Bow National Forest. The USDA Forest Service is actively investigating the cause of the fire. The origin area of the Mullen Fire has been identified and preliminary information indicates that the fire could be human caused. The fire remains under investigation.
Law enforcement officers from the Forest Service are requesting public assistance with the ongoing investigation. If you have first-hand information on activity occurring in the eastern area of Savage Run Wilderness, in the South Mullen Creek drainage, please call the Medicine Bow National Forest – Laramie Ranger District anonymous tip line at 307-745-2392.
When calling the tip line, select option 5 (“to report any other information”). Please provide information about the date, time, location, and any identifying facts about the activity. You are not required to leave your name or contact information, but it can be helpful in identifying responsible individuals.
Currently, and at the time of fire ignition, the forest is in Stage II fire restrictions, meaning no campfires.

Surprisingly we saw camps with a campfire in area 11, locals at that.

I have the same tag plus a general tag. Hoping for the same. They have a lot of area 9 and 110 closed to public access. So here is hoping for rain or snow. Preferably rain.

Unfortunately, this fire is growing fast and will probably grow a whole lot more figuring rough terrain and lots of fuel to burn plus no wet weather expected for near future.

Dad and I are due to leave next Saturday to start out for our unit 81 deer/unit 13 cow elk tags. Right across 230 from where the fire started. I wonder how much this will move the deer/elk around? Praying for the firefighters and those affected by the fires.

Well we never made it a week. As reference we ran it full out for 8 hours and it probably took care of 2/3 of a 20# tank. Switched to wood after that one.
