Maybe some people should trust his opinion there as well.

What a jack donkey. If he thinks the corner crossing and public land transfer issues didnt require BHA to have corporate backing, then I've got a bridge to sell him.

I think that’s a fair point about needing corporate backing to fight the corner cross battle. I didn’t think of that before.

But to me, it really does seem like BHA just got acquired by ME.

Maybe it will be good, hopefully it is, but I am not yet convinced. I’m just a bro on the internet tho so what the hell do I know.

BHA has a large membership, and a small financial footprint. Annual revenue last year was 6M. ME’s was over 100M. The tail doesn’t wag the dog.

I think some folks are forgetting that Callahan’s volunteer involvement with BHA either preceded his employment with First Lite and eventually Meat Eater or has run on a concurrent timeline. He’s had a consistent message and history of solid support for conservation through the course.

Criticizing Ryan because one of the corporate sponsors of his employer is an ATV company is ridiculous. Look at how much social media that Ryan and Meateater have produced that have promoted pack stock such as Llamas or backpack access in comparison of how they promote Can-Am in their videos. In fact, I don’t think I can remember any videos that show ATV use. ( I’m not saying there aren’t any just none that come to mind.)


Matt implies that Ryan will have compromised leadership because part of his paycheck is collected from an ATV company. Has Ryan’s advocacy changed since Can Am began advertising on MeatEater? It hasn’t that I can see.

In my opinion, BHA stands to benefit from Ryan’s connection to MeatEater not the other way around.

Ryan’s advocacy pre-dates most of what anyone knew of him. He made First Lite an affinity brand tied to conservation. At Meateater he was in charge of all their conservation advocacy and content. He’s one that the hunting and conservation world should consider very fortunate to be among our ranks.

I’ve had a very strong relationship with Ryan, for many years. If I only used the fingers on my right hand to list people making a huge difference, one finger would be used to count him in that group. What he’s been able to do with keeping Meateater engaged on our issues is impressive, given the presence of private equity as one of the large owners. I’m lucky, the private equity of my operation all have the same last name I have, so I’m not accountable to the complex structure Ryan has had to balance.

Ryan is tireless, smart, and principled. He and I talk regularly. I probably get some inside knowledge from those talks. That might make me biased in his favor. Anyone doubting Ryan’s life of work in the field of conservation advocacy and a voice for public lands might want to expand their information sources a bit. Anyone who speculates he’ll change his commitment to these issues likely doesn’t know him and/or is not aware of his history of advocacy.

Ryan is the kind of guy you want in your foxhole when the shells are incoming. And given what’s incoming from DC, hunters, wildlife, and public land users are going to need Ryan and many more like him.

I’m glad Ryan is now the leader at BHA.

Matt is probably right about some of the stuff he says but the way he goes about it is pretty annoying. If one wanted to hunt quietly wouldn't they just disappear into the woods and go hunting without telling anyone? Making a lot of noise about all the damage other hunting personalities are doing only seems to draw attention to them and make people watch them out of curiousity or at least look into who they are and what they are up to. The Cam Hanes Halloween costume was funny though.

He may not be perfect but he 100% genuinely does not give a phuck what anybody thinks about his opinions on all those about fame and income with hunting/outdoor recreation. And he’s funny, real funny. The Halloween costume was legendary.

But wait maybe catch a podcast on “meat care” by somebody who doesn’t process his animals ..
