Manufactured Outrage

Will Durant said in his book titled ā€œThe Story of Philosophyā€ A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within.

Abraham Lincoln is falsely attributed to saying ( but it’s true) ā€œgreat nations do not die from war, they die from internal rottenness.ā€

This is exactly what the powers of both sides want. The peasants fight about stupid, irrelevant shit and they continue to build power and wealth with few people noticing.

Years ago I got onto Facebook to reconnect with friends from college, and family, who are spread all over the country. But it seems like lately "the news feed" is what really dominates. I'm sure fed the algorithm by clicking on an article here and there. But my goodness has it all gotten so toxic - whether it's Sydney Sweeney or Karmelo Anthony or Sophie Cunningham or who/whatever.

I realized most of my family and old friends don't even post about their lives and kids anymore and I just decided to drop it. I took FB off my phone a couple months ago and I'm happier for it. My crappy old Android phone doesn't really have the space for it anyway.
I just looked at my Facebook. Of the first 10 posts on my feed I personally knew 1 person. 2 were groups that I’m in, and the other 7 were posts that Facebook thought I would like and was suggesting I follow the page.

I think the bigger picture is when did we as a society become a fear driven hateful mob , in general?
I think it’s because stupid people can’t really have any dialogue about an intelligent topic , so they gravitate to things they can comment about, like Sidney , Sophie and what not .
We are a decadent society and heading for failure.
There are more stupid people now days than educated, by far .
The topics that are discussed in social media are the stupid people judging people so they feel superior, in one way or another.
And on Hunt Talk also , it kills me when people on here say they don’t do any social media. What do they think HT is ?
Romper Room ?

I dont think there really is that much faux outrage in the hunting world. Or maybe thats because this is the only hunting social media i keep up with. If you got rid of social media hunting content you'd rid yourself of most problems we have. If you'd have done it 25 years ago we'd really be in a better place. (I know there are a couple good things it has brought us but overall the juice ain't worth the squeeze imo). Everyone wants to blame the other guy meanwhile there losing access and tag oppurtunity so they can watch there favorite influencer take the trip or lease that spot. I find it very similar to all the political bs. People rooting for the same people that are simultaneously pulling the rug out from under you.

I’ve been giving lots of thought recently to the concept of manufactured outrage, a loosely defined term that I would say means overhyping a small (often non-) issue as a means to provoke. Our current political climate is one thing, but it leaks into so many areas of public life, most recently with all the stupid discourse surrounding Sydney Sweeney. I could not care less, yet suddenly my social media feed won’t stop dumping a whole lot of articles going back and forth over nothing.

There’s certainly plenty of real outrage in the hunting space over the myriad of issues we face—as other threads demonstrate. But just for fun, what do folks here feel are manufactured issues and divisions across hunting that, at the end of the day, are meaningless?

Please keep it civil.
"suddenly my social media feed..."

Kill that anxiety machine ^^^ and the world is a completely different place. I have zero social media. It's awesome. It started when people I didn't know started jumping into discussions with family on Facebook. F that! I'm gone. Life is suddenly incredibly better.

And no, I don't count the forums as social media. Though you do have to have to build a decent ignore list on some. :-)

I call it manufactured divisiveness. The purpose of the outrage isn't just outrage, it's to get us all fighting amongst ourselves while we get flat out carpet bagged like Russia in the 90s. I get to say that because I lived and worked in post-soviet Russia for five years as a part of US diplomatic mission, and I know what that process looks like.

Argue about that Clancy woman while the nation gets looted. Argue about trans athletes while our constitutional rights get shredded. Howard and Brandon Lutnick thank us for keeping our heads turned the other way!
