Oh come on!! Let's hear it Randy. I sure had some things to say about that guy. Not much of it would be PC though.

Well, after I gave my thoughts, I left the hearing room, as it was packed. I head out in the big display area, working on my smart phone. I stop, turn around, and look up to see a Native American guy is walking toward me while talking on a cell phone. It was almost like he followed me after I walked past him when I walked out of the room.

I watch while he approaches while talking on his cell phone. He says to whoever is on the other line, "Wait one second."

With the phone still stuck to his cheek, he then says to me in a very demanding tone, "Do you eat those wolves when you kill them? I am on the phone with elders and they want to know if you eat them."

Surprised at his boldness, I look at him and with no hesitation, tell him the first thing that came to mind, "If they give me five tags, I intend to eat five wolves."

He looks very surprised and says. "What did you say?"

I repeat myself.

He mumbles something about the wolves representing their ancestors. I could not understand the rest of what he said.

He turns slightly away, then talks into the phone and says, "This guy says he's gonna eat them."

I tell him I will also tan the hides and boil the skulls, but he is walking away talking to the elders, so I am not sure if he hears me.

Then he hangs up, walks into the hearing room to give his spiel. I did not go back into the room, so I did not hear his talk.

The body language, surprise by both of us, and the tone of the discussion was actually quite humorous. It was like he was surprised by my reply, then almost offended that I did not share this view of wolves, even if I was wanting to utilize an animal that he holds sacred.

At the time, I had no idea he was supposedly the new chief-to-be of the Blackfoot Tribe. Not that such awareness would have changed my answer

If they have spiritual value to them, I have no problem with that. I am pretty tolerant of any faith or practice. If they want to raise a bunch of wolves on the Blackfoot Reservation as part of their spiritual beliefs, fine with me. Not too excited about a state agency being asked to manage wolves according to the religious belief some have of wolves.

I still don't know if he was pissed because I told him I would eat what he views as the spirit of his ancestors, or if he was just surprised with my answer.

As a side note, Steve Rinella from Meat Eater gave me grief for not inviting him to share/cook the wolf Critter shot last year. I explained that I intended to eat it, but with the putrid smell and then the discouragement received from the biologist who tagged it, I changed my mind. Steve claims it would have been good.

If I get a wolf this year, Steve says he will show me the best ways to cook and eat it. Might make for a good segment to a wolf episode, with Steve teaching me how to cook it. If I do get one, I intend to take up Steve on his offer to teach me how to best prepare a wolf for table fare, so long as it is disease-free.

If we do that, we will get some beer, open my shop, and have Hunt Talkers come to sample it and see if Steve knows what he is talking about.
