Not the one I wanted

My old mind was a head of my fingers in post #7. What I meant to mean was a hunter who hunts for trophies aka big bucks, does not SEE one, and then shoots a year old piss buck. Did the thought cross their mind that little bucks grow up to be big bucks? It was not about meat hunting, sorry I did not make it clear in #7 post.
What is a "piss" buck? I have never heard that term before.

Idk I’ve shot big bucks and little bucks. The way I view it is the tag someone buys is their property to do what they want with. Whether they slap it on giant or a small one is their choice. I think the hunting community as a whole has become a lot of if you ain’t shooting monsters you might as well hang up your hunting gear. I don’t believe that because if we do that then hunting will slowly die out as many hunters would quit. This is America last time I checked and that comes with the freedom of choosing what deer you shoot, and if you don’t like that that’s okay but you’ll never stop it and it’s pretty un-American in my opinion to think you should be able to tell people what to shoot sounds more like a dictatorship. I understand places like Alaska having size requirements for moose and such for the health of the moose population. But if it doesn’t affect the the overall health of a species have at it, it’s your tag!

I’m guilty of having said that once years ago (in my far younger/dumber days) on a deer hunt in WY. Was glassing a brushy knob with my buddy and across the draw a nice 3x4 got up and took off with a smaller buck in tow. They bailed into the draw and I was just catching bits and pieces of them running through the sage. My friend on the binos shouts “they’re coming out” as I was set up to shoot across through a gap in the brush. He yells “now”, I pull trigger, deer goes down, high fives begin…

Hike over to the far hill and here lies the smallest forky I’d ever shot. Ever!
Guess they’d swapped positions while running across.

Not the one I wanted!

Reflecting back 40+ years later-
I was lucky they hadn’t picked up a doe
Im sure I had more time than I thought
Don’t blame your spotter for YOUR OWN mistake, I’m the one behind the trigger
Probably was outshooting my ability back in that era
He was fork tender, why bitch about it!

99.9% of the time, I shoot the first legal animal my tag is good for.

Just this past weekend, I received two different messages from hunters who had just filled their antelope tags. The pics sent over included smiling kids, just happy to be included in the hunt with their family. In both instances, it seemed the sender was trying to justify the smallish size of the animal killed - drives me crazy!! Punch your tag on what you want, period - who the crap cares what others think...
