Its that time again. January 1 is the end of our deer season here in NC and for a few years now me and a buddy have been doing a man drive to close the season out. We're yet to put a deer down but we have seen a couple. Last year we had 5 people and this year we have 8. We're going to hunt the same piece we did last year as it has grown up a lot better this year. I've hunted it a few times this year and there's good deer sign on all the logging roads. I'm sitting at the gate now to warn any other public land hunters of what we're doing. Safety briefing is slated for 0800 and hopefully by 0830 we will officially be underway. I'll try to get a few pics and post updates along the way.

We had a fun day. True to tradition we did not kill any deer. I did, however, find a really big turtle shell. Its a good thing I'm not a gambler because I would've bet every last dime the last 2 areas we pushed through would've had deer in them. Perfect bedding area and you could see beds there but no deer.20260101_081255.jpg20260101_100906.jpg20260101_120626.jpg20260101_120630.jpg20260101_121635.jpg20260101_121643.jpg

hunting Jan 1st without trudging through knee deep snow.......sometimes I wish I was born in the south
A gorgeous 55 degree day.
Good luck and be safe! That turtle shell looks like what we call a Map turtle? Do you know what kind it is?
I think its a river cooter but I need to pull out the book and see if I can verify.
