Ok ladies and gents. I have 20 acers that most all of it has been farmed. Do you guys think I should continue to let the farmer farm it or shall I let it grow for cover for the deer.

My thinking is. There is very little cover for the deer now as most everything is farmed around me. So insted of fighting to get them to come to my fields for food why not play the other side and offer them cover as there is plenty of food for them all around me.

Whats the thoughts of this one...

The land is raw and I am able to do whatever...

You need to look at all the land within about a half mile of your land and figure out what is most lacking between summer food, winter food, doe bedding, buck bedding and provide that.

You could also contact your states game & fish, they'll usually give you the best information that'll work with what soils on your place. I'm a huge fan of high mast trees. Plant a orchard of high yielding pairs that will provide food at different times. (White & red oaks, persimmons, crab apple...) If you're surrounded by crops, no need to plant more row crops. But the draw back for trees is they take longer to produce compared to food plots.

This!! Where my place in Indiana is, cover is not lacking so we plant food. If I was to buy my FILs 24ac, it'd be in trees/cover the day after I bought it as the lack of cover is the problem.
