Look at how the cap is not connected to the stem. Not a morel. The new one growing also does not look like a young morel.

@Dsnow9 it's not a morel, the cap isn't connected at the bottom like the pic @44hunter45 posted...

Along the Front Range you typically find yellow morels around late April/early May near rivers or under cottonwood. Black morels show up early summer in burns. The timing alone makes it suspect.

I’ll repeat it. Those are 100% NOT morels. They are stinkhorns.

Dig it up to see if there is an egg like the pics here. Maybe you can find some "eggs" that haven't grown yet which are edible...

Definitely not morels!! Wrong time of year, but I guess anything is possible. Latest (or maybe earliest, depending on how you look at it) find for me was a black morel on December 29th, but that doesn't really count as it was on a mountain in Maui.

However, make sure to have someone take a video of you popping those stinkhorns into your mouth, so we can get a nice view of your puckering face

As a PSA I offer the following advice: I'm not an expert on any fungus, but this is not something that should be learned on the internet. I'm not at all implying that the OP was going to pop it into a skillet based on opinions on a newsgroup. There's always some local guru who will know for sure. Usually mushroom toxicity is mild, but can be serious, so this is one of those things you learn from someone who knows the field well.

Speaking of stinkhorns, I was just out walking the pups around the house when the scent hit me from about 15 feet away. Flies were swarming it. Get a really good idea of the sac it "grows" out of with this one. There is another that you can just see to the right of the stalk in the first photo that hasn't popped up yet.
