If not, then why did I have a confrontation with two schmucks on dirt bikes riding up behind me when I am trying to bear hunt?

The only thing that stopped the escalation of the argument was having my 4 y.o. daughter with me. I eventually just stepped aside, pulled my cell phone out, and told them to "go ahead", "if you are confident in your assertion that you can ride those @%#$%#% things on DNRC land then go on, I will have a warden or deputy waiting for you at the gate you just rode around".

Apparently, they weren't too confident.

I hate dirt bikes, and dirt bags that can't obey the rules.

Its a risk you take any time you walk in on a gated road. Frustrating as all hell.

And the idiots who feel compelled to shoot up road signs and other manifestations of authority such as that I-beam. Now don't you know they were really threatened by that post?

Why is it that the "Authorities" are never around when these Aholes are shooting the crap out of everything in sight. Since I'm on my soapbox, the why do these people and I use the term loosely think they are entitled to go where the H ever they want to, sign or no sign. It makes my blood boil.

I was at the end of a 4.5 mile road, that's closed year round to motorized wheeled travel. I hear motors coming, and 2 4 wheelers round the bend. Believe me when I say it wasn't a pretty sight. I ate his arse off in front of his kid. It really pissed me off. They knew what they were doing, but couldn't help themselves. They have those machines, and are going to use them if they can.

smarandr,Thank you for the link, wish the papers would print more of these stories, but unfortunately the vandals have to get caught first.

Been my experience chasing elk in Co. that it's a slow day when the GW's give a flip about atv's.

I was in Colorado in 2009 elk hunting and saw some guys getting written up for operating an atv on a forbidden road. So sometimes there is justice. Just not often enough. I personally own 2 atvs and I always obey the laws. I don't ride on public land though, there is very little public land in NC where atvs are allowed anyway. Maybe Colorado should look at limiting their use more. Would not hurt my feelings.

I had the same issue two years ago here in MN. The a$$ said, I don't see a badge so screw off, I then called the local dnr and this must have lived real close to ride with no plate and come on public land with a dirt bike....he even had to balls to do it right at last light...the perfect time for the deer to come out....I was so ticked! I was really bummed he did not have a plate to take a picture of.

Been talking to a Forest Service friend. New travel managment plan is a coming here on the forest. He told me if a road is open to motorized use, it will have a sign. No sign, stay out. At least the FAATVers will no longer be able to break off signs and be stupid about it anymore. I wonder if it will work

I've got no problem with people using them legally. They can be a great tool. I had an incident about 7 years ago in our local wilderness area. The narrow trail head had a sign very similar to the one Draht showed. There is no way they could of missed it. I hike for an our up this trail/slash logging road following these wheeler tracks. At the end of the road I find the wheeler stashed. I pulled out my cell phone and called in the license number to the local warden and continued my archery hunt. I never saw them but the fact that they didn't have to hike the same amount as i did and knowing that they basically brushed the no motorized vehicle sign on the way in made me mad.

I called the warden after the hunt and he called them at their home. He said he asked if they had been in there and they said yes. He then gave them a $100 fine for riding in a wilderness area. So I learned that you don't need to confront them and you can just get some intel from the vehicles. I know in Montana you can just call the tip mont line and give them license numbers as well. I'm sure some don't follow up but it can work.

Well, the way the conversation was going, I really didn't want to start snapping pics, I had my camera in my hand too. I was seriously afraid things could go from bad to worse, with my daughter there, no way. Any aggression toward me would have been met as aggression towards her, I mean, what would they do, beat the hell out of me then make sure she got out of the woods ok? There would have been only one outcome, me in prison, and her in counseling.

Guys like that give all dirtbikers a bad rep. It's a shame because not all are like that. We treat it the same way as a hunt, follow ALL regulations ALL the time with NO exceptions. But there are assholes who don't and it makes the entire sport frowned upon
