Had an easy day at work texted my buddy John , asked you wanna fling some arrows ?????
To which he replies yeah but I want to do a power hike and put some weight on a pack , so I reply , well if you’re gonna do a power hike I’ll just tagalong I haven’t hiked with the pack all year or with weight for that matter, so I plan on just bringing my rifle . John likes to get at it a little more aggressive me me not so much. He’s 41 I’m almost 51 , I’m not as much into working out anymore.
Next thing I know , He’s pulling out an extra pack and he’s got me off in his garage wanting to put a 35 pound kettle bell on my pack to which I said no I’ll just take the 20 lbs , I haven’t done this this year or ever !! he’s like no you’ll be fine and then my friend rigs me up with the 35 pound kettle bell.
And for anyone that reads my posts on Hunttalk im a lot about pictures and less on words . Time for Pictures of my death march .
me questioning my sanity as we go in the gate , To which John informs me it’s a mile and a quarter plus straight up
almost to the top I’m gassed , I’m not liking John at this moment, but I’m a gamer
getting to the top, what a view,
This was my first time in here my buddy John had told me about it sent me some pictures previously, so I was happy to see it ,
I spot the first deer ! A little button buck
John spots the first elk, We could see more of the herd down below this one after this photo was taken but it was time to move and see more country
Where a mile and a half in at this point to which I’m getting rid of that kettle bell because we are going downhill now to glass and check out some more cuts in the area on the other side of the ridge we’re on now, And I’m still thinking about the mile and a half downhill to the truck , So John decides to try to go double macho and add my 35 pound kettle bell to his 40 pounds that he’s got in his pack it was short-lived he made it maybe 50 yards before we left the kettle bell in the grass but he gave it the effort
We see a lot more deer and talk about how to hunt this area for blacktails and start putting a plan together for Blacktail season and then on the way out we glass the far Ridge which is well over 1000 yards away to where those elk were originally and more of the elk have moved up hill from out of the bottom , And some of the elk are now bedded to which I say to John I think that one is a branch bull !! He confirms and then put the kettle bell on my backpack and then we work up over the ridge that we were on back towards the tree line and we are the closest that we can be to the elk that we have now identified it as a bull , we start looking at it again thinking it’s got to be at least a four point if we can see antlers from this far away so we start trying to take pictures of it is still over 1000 yards out with our cell phones to our Binos standing on a ridge talking .
the best pic I got of the bull , We determined that it was a small five point bull it was also the first branch bull we’ve seen with cows all summer
At this point we’ve got to see elk and deer and we’re Feeling like it was successful hike we’re gonna come back to hunt blacktails in here and as I’m glassing the bull across the canyon and all of a sudden I hear John say holy blankety , blank there is a bull in the road. I drop the Bino’s start looking around and down on the road below us all of about maybe 200 yards at most is a big monster stud bull just standing there in the setting sun , velvet antlers gleaming and glowing In the sunset !!! That bull was not there when we started glassing and taking pictures of the elk across the canyon , the only thing we can think of is he was bedded just on the edge of the canyon and fed up onto the road while we were taking pictures and he gave us quite a show for about two minutes before he walked back down into the canyon and out of sight, The really cool thing about this bull from watching it through the binoculars in the pictures the G3 on his right side is 2 1/2 to 3 feet long and it comes level to the top of his antlers
funny how a big stud ROOSEVELT bull makes the pain from a hard hike disappear , and you hike down the mountain, with that starry look in your eyes and a smile on your face as you dream about tagging out on that bull.
and even if I don’t see him again , it was worth it , But next time ... oh hell no !!!! John can pound sand , I’m Not on putting on no 35 pounds it gonna be 20 pounds or nothing I’m fine with that.
im home now, I hurt , And I have to work tomorrow , if I can walk , it’s time to make the pain go away
and dream a little more about September..........
