I've towed over 3,000 with an extension twice that long, many times, thousands of miles. Although mine was 1 piece and made to get past the camper overhang.

Yea it was the multiple piece rig that I was concerned with.

I'm guessing 5000 to 7000 lbs max, maybe a really short tongue trailer also??

That other ball has to of been bouncing down the road when he tows.

He probably did it because of the spare tire overhanging the location of the original hitch. Kind of hard to get a trailer tongue connected up if there's a tire in the way.

With that much of a drop hitch that extension is completely unnecessary for any trailer. If he had a straight / no drop then yes it would be tough.
