Recommend me a decent road bike at a good price. I want to do some sprint triathlons. The one I am looking at in a couple of months is 16 miles but I may take Moosie up on his half IM challenge next year.

Now imagine Moosie and Schmalts riding around together on a tandem bike wearing those outfits with some Queen playing in the background.

Moosie... you're not cool until until you get some clipless pedals, aerobars, and shave your legs.

How much do you want to spend? I'd figure out what you want (size, frame material, components, etc) and then look for used -- lot's of deals out there. Also take a look at these prices for entry-level bikes...

LIke I've said before schmalts- no one looks good in bike shorts. Except, maybe, some girls in the gym.

But at least you don't look like a smurf.

BG- you forgot to add the disc wheel and sponsor stickers.

WV- before I spent a bunch of money on a bike, I'd make sure I liked the sport.

I did my first 6 races- including a full ironman on an aluminum road bike I got for $100 from a pawn shop. If I were you, I'd borrow a road bike or even Mtn bike for the first couple of races in case you don't like it.

Don't worry, even on a Mtn bike, you'll probably be able to out ride Moosie.

:D

Good advice.

I'm roughly 5'10, 170 and ride a 56 cm frame. Trek and Cannondale are two good road bike companies with quality products. You can always tweak the setup with a longer stem or taller seatpost once you have the frame, just don't get it too big for you.

Buy cheap. Use the extra money for upgrades- aerobars, wheels, etc.

I paid almost a grand for this bike new five years ago, but you could probably get it for less than a third of that off ebay.

I got a carbon HED wheelset off ebay for $250. You'd normally pay four times that.

Like BG says- there are deals out there- especially now.

If only I could find a Schmitt and Bender scope for $500......

Thanks for the advice on bikes guys. I have a Trek 520 mountain bike I can use. Just have to take the baby seat off the back :)

BG,

Gotta hand it to him, that guy's got a sense of humor.

But if he's riding everyday, clearly he's no friend of Moosie's.

: )

WV,

That's the spirit. I saw a guy ride an entire 112 mile Ironman bike leg on a mountain bike.

He finished, too.

Bottom line: Good equipment is fine but most of what you need is between your ears.

I did 30 miles yeserday on the bike. So..... I've ridden the bike 3 times now total. I'm SOOOOOO ready for the 56 miles of Riding, Bring it sucka's !!!

If you're serious, I kinda feel sorry for you...it's going to be a long day.

Moosie, 30 miles?... I did that at lunch yesterday -- of hill repeats. ;)

I heard a rumor today that water temp is only 46deg. If they cancel the swim after I logged 110hrs of swimming over the past 9 months... I'm gonna be piiiiiiiissssed.

That would suck. But it wouldn't be the first time a Tri turned into a Du.

I'd be surprised if they let it go if the water is that cold on race day. The fast guys would be ok, cold but ok. A high HR would generate enough heat to keep you from going hypothermic. It would be too cold on the slower/ older swimmers even with wetsuits and neoprene head covers. Race directors still remember IM Utah.

I swam almost a mile once in open water at 55 degrees off Cape Ann years ago on a dare and that was brutal. Made it back to the beach but only barely- and I was swimming all out to try and stay warm.

Good luck on the race guys.
