Tuesday morning I was leaving work to go to lunch. As I was waiting for my ride, a car pulled up and an elderly black man got out, closed the door and started toward the lobby of the building. He appeared to be having some trouble walking so I asked if I could be of assistance. He stood very tall and thanked me then said he would be fine. It was hard to miss the bright red blazer he was wearing and as I stood close enought to read the patch on the pocket, I noticed it said "Tuskegee Airmen". I asked about the patch and he introduced himself and told me that he was the last commanding officer of the 332nd pursuit squadron in the European Theater during WWII. I shook his hand and thanked him for everything he'd done and for his service. It made this 66 year old man as giddy as a puppy with two peckers. This man is a real hero. I feel very privileged.

That was a hero indeed. I don`t think there are many left. I was just talking about TheTuskegee Airmen this week at work (airport) when two P51 Mustangs flew low overhead...love that sound! Increadible aircraft that these men flew at the end of the war. I might have been thinking about them due to the movie Red Tails. Anyway, I`m glad you were in the right place at the right time and were able to meet him.

I think you might have meant 86 year old man, as 66 would have made him a baby at the end of WWII. ;) Very cool though, I am sure he has some interesting stories to tell.
