Hunting out west

Myself and a couple of buddies, wanting to plan a mule deer/elk hunt out west. We're not sure where to start as most of us haven't hunted outside our home state of Louisiana. I myself would like to start off with mule deer and move up to elk in a couple of years. We probably would be driving to our destination, and would like to drive no more than a day to day and a half to destination.Any help and info on places, success rates on tags , harvest rates and how hard it is to hunt that area would be appreciated. I know most states have success rates but i'd like to hear from the hunters on the ground who have done it. We are beginners to this type of hunting, i myself have harvested a few nice whitetail bucks in the last few years, and would like to try different species. Thanks

You ask many questions.... too many to answer, for so many places to hunt. I was (and still consider myself) an amateur when hunting out west. The best advice that I received was to get onto the "states" websites and research draw % and hunter success rates. Most of the states have excellent websites.
As you know draw rates depend on points and areas that you want to hunt.

I also subscribe to the "Huntin' Fool" which will give you info. Note: you have to "weed" through the junk.

If you want over-the-counter then expect people and "maybe" average animals. If you want less people and the covenanted areas then start building points. If you build points, in most cases be prepared to wait.

With a 1 1/2 day drive you are probably limited to New Mexico or Colorado

You want options?

We got options!
In 2 days with 2 folks driving you can cover a huge amount of asphalt so your options can be increased with minimal extra effort.
There are areas of Idaho that a person can hunt elk and mule deer over the counter.You are not likely to see 400 class bulls but I cannot tell from a steak the quality of a mount.
Eastern Montana has big deer and big elk and landowners that allow tresspass for a reasonable rate if you cannot find public land. With the passing of recent laws, tags MAY be avaiable to you OTC as well.
North east Wyoming has a bunch of deer and antelope OTC with large expanses of private land that can be accessed with a handshake and good attitude/sometimes.
If you are after a new record animal then you will have to go where I have not been.

Are you serious about studying maps and taking educated guesses about where the elk/deer will be??I'd think about that before you decide if you want to do a diy hunt.For the most part, NOBODY,is going to give you a spot to hunt.They will help you with areas but your still going to have to do alot of map work at home.If thats not for you, go on a drop camp in Co
Co. is probably your best bet given the drive you want from home.

Yep, go join the crowd with an OTC tag in Colorado. They are beggin for hunters there and the F&G will tell you right where to go to kill a biggun!

Now are you in North or South Louisiana? I have been lucky and had pretty good luck Elk Hunting in Colorado in the past. The Biggest thing is to not be overwhelmed by the fact you are hunting a Western State, your still gonna have your back against a tree and your gun in your lap! There's no deer or elk in Colorado....go to Wyoming or Montana
