I was asked which is the best country to hunt in Africa

There are 54 countries in Africa and I have only hunted in 8 of them, so there has to be others here who are better qualified to answer this question

However, my preference of the ones I have hunted is Namibia . Specifically the Caprivi area of the country.

This country is about the size of Texas, so it is small, friendly, english speaking country where one can hunt an abundance of plains game plus all 5 of the dangerous game. However, Elephant, buffalo and Lion are all more plentiful in other countries .

When asked about non hunting sights it extends from the Nile and Pyramids to Table Mountain, -----with Mt Kilimanjaro, Victoria Falls, The Congo gorillas, in between.

Huge diverse continent that is worth visiting, at least we always enjoyed our visits.

One more thing, you should check out the travel alerts from the state dept before booking a flight to a specific country. In fact, today I am not sure how comfortable I would be traveling in Egypt

Growing up, I had dreamed about going to Africa and hunting some of the critters there. The stories in Outdoor Life and other magazines kept a young hunter interested in doing it for himself! Now that I've gotten, umm, older, I just don't have that same desire. I know what long haul flights are like, the reality of what things cost, among other reasons just makes Africa not very high on my bucket list.

On the other hand, I have been to England after an invite from fellow Hunttalker devon deer. The wife and I traveled over the pond and I managed to get a Roe buck to add to my collection of critters at home. There is a story somewhere on here about my journey and sightseeing tour of England, Wales and Ireland. Had a great time, and made quite a few wonderful memories.

Dave, I wanted to thank you for your reply and for the link to your thread regarding your trip to Europe. I enjoyed reading the thread and a belated congratulations to you sir.

I also enjoy hunting Europe, my favorite countries are Austria, Spain and Sweden. My granddaughter just finished a hunting trip in Spain a couple of months ago. We had a great time.

Although it has changed and things have gotten crazy expensive to hunt Africa, I will always be thankful for the opportunities I had to do so. I always enjoyed out time there.

But I also enjoyed hunting in my home state of Arizona. I have just never had the same feeling, when hunting, that I had when hunting lion in Africa or coastal grizzly in Alaska. Maybe I am an adrenalin junkie--or was. Now I get excited just waking up each morning lol

Have hunted 4 countries and backpacked trough 20. RSA, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia for hunting. Zim was my favorite to hunt. I hunted Cape buff, tuskless ele and hyena there. The Zambezi Valley is just a wild wild place with very wild animals and I loved it. Would love to hunt Tanzania as well as a true jungle hunt in Congo. They are way out of budget for me though.

IdahoNick. Wow, that had to be a ton of fun with memories to last a lifetime. Without a doubt Zim is a great hunting destination. congratulations on the buff and elephant. Yes, everything has just gotten crazy expensive, unfortunately. I was fortunate enough to travel through the Congo but did not hunt. I did go with someone who hunted the Lord Derby in CAR and that was a great experience. I did not hunt there however. I share your enthusiasm but alas the years rolled up on me and I can no longer do anymore than stay at the main lodge and wait for the hunter's to return and tell their stories

(-: never regretted growing up in Arizona. I am sure things have changed since way back then, but the Elk, Deer, Antelope, Turkey, Bear, mountain lion, Javelina, and yes the elusive coues. But the effort in knocking down a coues was always rewarded at the dinner table. Excellent table fare . BTW, the bird hunting is not chopped liver either (-:

I've been to RSA hunting twice, and have visited Zim, Lethsotho, Moz, and Egypt for the sights. Plan to take the family to Nam in the near future, or back to RSA to hunt with friends. Africa is a magical place, that can only be understood by visiting it. I think many people have a preconceived notion of what to expect, or want the "body" count to be as high as possible. Maybe I was lucky, but I dictated what we hunted and where we went, it was an amazing experience, and hardly a hand-holding hunt. I'd go back to just shoot birds and enjoy the experience of being there, just wish it wasn't 36 hours of flying from here. Hahaha

You know, until you mentioned it I realize I’ve never heard much about bird hunting in Africa. What types of huntable fowl are over there?

I’ve thought just going to see some of Africa’s wildlife would be pretty amazing. Some of those antelope species are striking, but I can’t say I’ve ever felt a big desire to hunt there. Would probably change the instant I started seeing critters however

Bambi stew----"Africa is a magical place" So true sir--you dont even have to hunt to enjoy the "magic" of Africa But glad you did (-;

Hunting wife---in Namibia we hunted a variety of Grouse, Doves, Quail and Guineafowl --plus some I am forgetting. Also if you like to fish, try to make some time to go Tiger fishing, we enjoyed it anyway.

bobbydean---thank you. That is very kind of you. You might get a kick out of this. I had the opportunity to speak to a group of young men, exchange students from various locales and some of them hunt, The conversation got to my younger days ( 40's & 50's) on the farm in Arizona. I was telling them we often shot deer from the barn, as well as ducks on the pond just below the barn, geese in the corn fields, etc, but the part that was funny was when I told them that my dad had the rifle and shotgun leaning in the corner of the barn and shells were on the 2 x 4 s along the wall of the barn. With wide eyes one said--"you didn't keep the guns in a gun safe ? " (-: things have changed for sure, at least for this old farm girl

Couple articles in past Sports Afield have been about the hunting birds in Africa. I think it'd be a hoot!! They do have some pretty cool looking birds there.
