Would anyone be interested in something lke this? A guy at work did a grand canyon hike last winter and it was a 3 day trip. one day down and one day up, and a travel day. He did it in January and said it was really a cool trip and the time of year that they had the place all to themselves.

Not unless the trip was for hunting or fishing, Kinda of a waste just to hike around with a bunch of guys to do what???
I mean seriously would you waste 1k to come to az just to hike the grand canyon? better to spend the the money during a archery hunt for deer which is over the counter or another pig/ram exotic hunt in texas

Del, it's the grand canyon! thats why. You probably dont get too excited because you been there a million times. I always have airfare vouchers i need to use and this is the type of thing i could do with it. Wouldnt cost me more than a couple hundred bucks.

Schmalts, are you trying to lure Jose out of his hole & push him into a bigger one?;)

...sounds like a plan.:D

My wife has done that Grand Canyon trip with her mom and friends several times, and twice in the last three years. They seem to have fun, but it's mostly a retired folks social group. They usually spend four days at the canyon: down one day, two days at the bottom at Phantom Canyon Ranch, and one day hiking out. They go sometime between mid-January and mid-March.

I'm like Del. I'd rather spend the money on hunting. I've got a vacation with the wife next year that's already going to cut into the hunting time.

Ive been there probally about 4 times since 1981, funny cause most of my hunting is done around that area both on the north rim and south rim.

South Rim, Ive only been through it once and that was when a freind of I were coming back from a north rim deer hunt and it was snowing so hard they closed all the roads, with the exception of the south rim canyon road.
the normal 2 hour drive took over 8 hours due to snow.
south rim is very commercialized ,noisy and parking sucks

north rim.
that place is pretty cool, Ive been there around 3 times but only once to actually go and look , I took my daughter on an archery deer hunt and she wanted to hike to see it. it was ok, the other times I wa shunting archery deer and went there for supplies mainly( food) and april and I looked around.
no traffic, quiet, lots of deer and buff and turky running aorund.

then theres a place I hunt on the north rim that every time I go there I stop and check it out its pretty cool , I can walk right out on a ledge an see the whole thing. and not see one person for 3-5 days and still can hunt deer while I am there.

I wouldnt use any vacation time. I would use a sick day for travel.
The guy I work with went in at the "bright Angel" point, i may have the name mixed up though, but i think it may be the donkey trails. He said it was surprisingly warm in the bottom even if it was cold on the rim and the biggest concern was in the beginning you had to watch for ice in one area

If you haven`t done it its worth it... Bright angel trail is the easy one[ south rim]... If you want more remote go to the north rim.. Delw come on now you know its worth the trip if you have never been to the bottom....sometime there are naked girls down there.... and some nice deer too!

Are you aware that Hell's Canyon in Idaho is bigger, wider and deeper than the Grand Canyon?

So are most of the women ;)

I've floated Hells canyon several times. 4 times actually. It's a Blast. This year we'er gonig to float the first stretch of 4 in the Owhyee's in 4 weeks. That should be fun.

Schmalts, thats a good Idea but a bit far for me. I'm limited on days to take off... I have to keep them for Wife days (Hawaii) and hunting. When I'm as old as you I should have alot more days to take off though :p

You guys always talk about getting in shap right befor hunting season, everyone is visiting the weight scales and chating about how many miles joged, or hiked..

What you really need to do is hike to a remote moutain each and every summer, together or apart (where no man has gone befor type thing) that would be doing somthing. Lots of Peaks in Montana don't even have trails to them. But well worth the effort. This is Torey Peak looking from Tweedy Peak the highest Peak in the Beaverhead County Montana. Torey is like 7 ft shorter.

Oh, don't tell Ramitupyourass that I figured how to post pics but this is the lake below Tweedy Peak that by son and I stayed at. It even had a beach at over 9,000 ft. It's name was Barb Lake and had alot of nice cuts hungry for anything.

I was up at tweedy peak. when i was up there i taught I saw a putty tat!

schmalts- I'd be interested in this trip for next spring! My wife would love to go as well, but JR will only be 7-8mos old, so she might not be up for dragging him a long. However, I think I could get a kitchen pass. If you flew into SLC I'd drive and save you the cost of a rental or if I couldn't go, you could have the use of my rig.

Moose, have fun floating in the Owyhee's. The owyhees are pretty awesome, I wish I could say I've spent more time out there.

Great, for the next year we can envision a shirtless man hike through the canyon with nightly backrubs
