When I built mine, I put commercial greenhouse shade cloth on top and fastened it to the stringers. It provides shade in the summer but lets the snow melt through in the winter.

That sounds like the best solution. Half a day to install ... then scout, hunt, hang out with new friend for a week. Win-Win!When I built mine, I put commercial greenhouse shade cloth on top and fastened it to the stringers. It provides shade in the summer but lets the snow melt through in the winter.
We have that now on top. We hate it ( sorry). We cant enjoy spring or fall with rain or winter with the snow melt dripping. We have a nice patio set we put out but cant leave it our because everything get wet. So every time we go we have to take it back off patio. When I built mine, I put commercial greenhouse shade cloth on top and fastened it to the stringers. No worries. We live in a virtual desert so sun is our biggest issue and for that the shade cloth is ideal 3 out of 4 seasons. Way too windy and cold to spend time on the patio in the winter so not an issue here. And on the Mama front… I get it. Happy wife is a happy life!We have that now on top. We hate it ( sorry). At the end of the day the boss wants it covered. Shes the cook and hospitality mgr. when I go out hunting. Don't mess with the chief. I have been putting this off for many years.
Yes but the cost was atrocious. Live in an area with small population so limited with contractors available. Everyone says it’s not a big enough project. Not a builder but have you thought of detaching completely from the house and raising the house side and cantilever over the eave/gutter area. That would eliminate the concern of snow/ice build-up damage.
