One thing i would add, as an easterner who went elk hunting, the term raghorn shouldnt stop you. I shot a 5x4 in ID on a guided bowhunt, yup a raghorn. Except when it strolled in, i shot and ehen i walked up to it, MASSIVE critter

I just drew a mid-season rifle elk tag in Utah, and as a Michigan resident who’s only hunted elk out west one other time, I absolutely agree with this. Any legal bull on the ground would certainly be a trophy for me!

I woild only hunt with ones that are entirely private land or landlocked public. A lot of those guides can get your bull n a open whear stubble field by 8 AM from the truck whike munching donuts and slipping hot coffee. They are that good at what they do. Check around White Sulphut Springs

Spoken like a man with boots on the ground knowledge. Anchor P has tremendous success using this strategy, consistently killing bulls in the 200-250 range. Some even approaching 280. I've heard they provide a custom menu for locally produced sweet rolls to ensure your hunt is planned to perfection.

This is true except the last part. I would say it is not because they are good at what they do but the elk are just not scared. Private vs public literally can be like that. I would also say this is a good example of how hunting was 30 years ago even on public land and how much harder it is now…
Now, the elk do have good reason to be scared of public land….

That was an odd opening weekend -15 for the first 3 days. We heard the shit show from about 7-8 miles away and decided to take a stroll and view the carnage. It was embarrassing to say the least. That incident, (along with another in 2017?) where the herd was trying to escape pressure private only to face the firing squad on the type 1 BMA, is precisely why the Catlin Ranch enrolled that property into BMA. It serves as a very effective, publicly funded high fence. Suckers!!

You said that you are not in great physical shape. Put the wind at your back and by the time you get where you are going the wind will have changed.

Lots of good advice. If you want to hunt Elk get out and do it. Sounds like guided is what you need to do. Hopefully you get a guide that will explain why and what he is doing to help you succeed on your hunt. There is nothing like being in the Elk Woods, If you are successful that is a bonus. Remember to enjoy your time out there.
