Same, also left the gun in the standing corn once. Luckily my cousin saw it and shut the head off fast enough. Benelli. That was a proud phone call.
I left for pheasant hunting the other day in my crocs and didn't notice until I was about to my spot.

As much as it hurts my ego to admit, in any/all situations involving me and any of my rifles, I'm the weak point. Best way to work on that weak point is to shoot. A lot.

Is it less of a bonehead move to forget your gun, or take the gun not remembering you took the bolt out awhile back( for some dumb reason)?
Or how about driving 1.5 hours, hiking a thousand feet in vert by daybreak, dump the Powder down the barrel and reach for the projectiles which aren't there.

So long as the smith makes sure it's true & correct, sure.
I like the refurb idea. New life in an old gun. But if your bbl is still good, don't change what works to chase ounces or unknowns.
