So goes the turkey hunting weekend again for Garrett. I don't think mother nature wants us to see spring in WI. The weekend for bird hunting was predictably miserable because we hunt the hardwoods and when the snow is still present the birds are out in the farm fields in large flocks picking corn out of the cow crap to keep alive. The deer are looking pretty rough too, we drove the quad past a doe eating a twig with dried up oak leaves on it. She looked not so long for the world unless the weather turns.
So.... instead of wasting more than an hour just going through the motions of turkey hunting we grabbed some taps from the neighbor and did a little sap collecting and boiled some syrup. Saturday we tapped 13 trees and collected around 25 gallons of sap, and then today was real slow with fresh snow and no sun to get it running so we ended up with 8 gallons. The local pros are having the best season in a long time and most guys have more than they can boil and store before it spoils.
All in all, a fun weekend, but not what we intended to do! Check out the ice piles on the river.
Lets see some other sugar shacks picks, I know a few guys here are going strong!

We go through 2 gallons a year so wont have enough to sell or swap, but stay tuned, last year there was another cheesehead that was selling some. If he doesn't show, I can ask one of my buddies up by my land for some. They will have plenty to sell.
I literally drink 2 quarts a year. I put it in a flask and take small sips off it when I am mountain biking. Way cheaper than power gels packs and it tastes better!

Still sounds like a fun weekend. I need to look into tapping trees. I have more maples than I'd like on our property. If I can get some sap from them they'd at least be worth something to me...

It is a labor of love if your not set up for a big operation. If your not running with wood and use a stove or turkey frier a guy burns more propane than the cost of getting it from a direct source. It definitely a fun project to do.

I'm going to look into the gear and the process. I think it may make for a fun weekend thing to do at the cabin. Thanks for the idea.
