Gunstocks?

My Father in Law got me a gift certificate to Brownells, and so a big box full of stuff to work on stocks is on the way.

I have an old tang safety Ruger M77 that I want to pillar & glass bed. That seems easy enough. The stock is a plain Jane walnut with straight grain. A nice, serviceable piece of wood, but it's about useless due to it's mass. It's thick like Roseanne and I want it to be svelte like Kate Upton. I'm thinking of slimming it down, putting a Schnabel fore-end on it and creating some panels like the old Mauser Pleizer rifles had.

Anybody do any wood carving or stock work that can recommend some books or online resources?

I will keep checking back on this thread...only a matter of time before NHY or I-pointer post up some Kate Upton pictures. Eventually someone will ruin the thread with a Roseanne picture.

I have a hand me down rifle that belonged to my great grandfather. He really enjoyed wood carving on all of his rifles. The rifle is a 250-3000 savage and owning it has always made me want to try my hand at carving. I picked up a book called Custom Gun Stock Carving, but have yet to try.

You surely can't have a problem with this... ;)

Ben- To heck with books, see if you can get in on one of the seminars in Livingston!

That said, I've seen on other sights where folks have recommended this book:

Here's some to give you some ideas. On the ones I've modified they were all Mauser actions and I just worked off of pictures such as these.

Ben - You remember my local buddy that has the .35 Whelen Ruger #1? He has been down to Livingston for the last 2 or 3 summers to take the custom gun making classes as mentioned earlier. I can put you in touch with him. I am sure he will have some great suggestions as he is really into it.

Excellent. That's what we're shooting for.

I can't take the credit for those, they're made by a gentleman in Minnesota who really cranks out some fine looking stocks and the inletting is almost turnkey. I just use some of the sculpting detail concepts around the wrist to turn a rather mundane run of the mill stock into something classier along the lines of an English deer stalker design or a classic German pattern. I still have to do a shadow line on two cheek pieces much like those examples.

If anyone is interested in contacting the stock maker I'll get his contact info after Christmas.

Ben, I think this is more in line with what you had in mind. This stock I have on my FN incorporates pretty much all of the Pleizer features.

That's the one, tarheel. I recieved Westbrook's book and have been reading it over the last couple of days. Tools, cetc should be here today. I'll make the first foray this weekend into glass and pillar bedding a couple of ruger m77 stocks and see how that goes before investing in some planes and files.

I may even try that stock making course next winter. With the Legislature starting on Monday, i'm afeered my free time is gone until April or May.

And this thread is as good as locked... since no one will ever want to look at it again except MtMiller since she is better looking than most Havre girls;)

Tarheel, those stocks are gorgeous. I would look at ANY picture of Roseanne to get a look at them. Just like miss Upton, I wouldn't know what to do if I had either of them.
